Although less than one square mile in area, Weehawken's rich history extends more than 400 years to when Dutch explorers first dropped anchor in Weehawken Cove. The town commands a unique location overlooking the Hudson River, with sweeping views of New York City. Its story begins with Weehawken's early bucolic estates, the idyllic attractions of the magnificent Palisades, and its notorious hidden dueling grounds, where Alexander Hamilton met his end at the hands of Aaron Burr in 1804. By the mid-19th century, a shift toward urban industrial development changed the landscape, as evidenced by the iconic 1883 Weehawken water tower and the sprawling, long-gone 1890s Eldorado Amusement Park that brought throngs of visitors via the largest passenger elevator in the world at that time. The construction of the Lincoln Tunnel as well as the developments of the town's neighborhoods, commerce, and government all helped to shape Weehawken's past and future.

In the mid-1800s, renowned Hudson River School painter Jasper F. Cropsey, who married local resident Maria Cooley, captured many West Milford landscapes in their autumnal splendor. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many resorts opened in the township and railroads brought wealthy vacationers from New York City to enjoy the countryside. West Milford also has a rich industrial history; ironworks produced cannonballs, stoves, and other items for the Continental militia during the Revolutionary War, including links for iron chains strung across the Hudson River to block access by the British fleet. In West Milford, previously unpublished images of these places and events bring the past to light, providing insight into the township's rich and diverse history. Featured items include images of the 40-room stone mansion Cross Castle, the flight of the airmail rocket Gloria, Idylease Inn during its construction, and the historic town center. Postcards created of local landmarks during West Milford's tourism heyday are included, as well as rare correspondence and letter cover images from the West Milford Museum's Jasper F. Cropsey collection.

Located just 22 miles outside of New York City, it is affectionately known as ""Colonial Westfield."" In 1720, the ""West Fields"" of Elizabeth Town were settled by English immigrants. During the Revolutionary War, several altercations with the Red Coats took place here. Not only did George Washington stop in Westfield during the Revolutionary War, but it is believed he slept at the home of one of the town's forefathers. After the advent of the railroad in mid-1800s, the small but productive farming village gradually developed into the attractive upscale community it is today. Known for its high standards in education, emphasis on the arts, and religious and civic institutions, Westfield is one of the few suburban towns in New Jersey that continues to maintain an active downtown shopping area, complete with a major department store. With approximately 50 restaurants, it draws visitors from all over the state.

Vintage photographs, maps, and a lively narrative reveal the heroic actions of citizens such as Janet Pike Gage, who raised the town's first liberty pole, and Reverend Azel Roe, the minister who defied the British during the Revolutionary War. Readers accompany the town's growth through the rise and fall of the clay and brick industries that once defined the local economy from 1825 to the onset of the Great Depression. Voted "All-America City" in 1964 by the National Municipal League, the community continues to uphold the legacy of the people who made it such a great place to live and work. Woodbridge: New Jersey's Oldest Township is a memorable tribute to this tradition.

In 1770, the first Wyckoff settlers were deeded land in what was to become Franklin Township. Spawning several other towns, such as Ramsey, Ho-Ho-Kus, Oakland, and Franklin Lakes, Franklin Township was renamed Wyckoff in 1926. Wyckoff has evolved from its early rural Dutch heritage to a thriving community. Today, Wyckoff is a blend of old and new, and a strong sense of history persists in the area. With views of historic stone houses, early businesses, and community activities and festivities, Wyckoff creates a sense of what nineteenth- and twentieth-century life was like in the township. Early settlers with names like Quackenbush, Terhune, Van Houten, Ackerman, Pulis, and Van Blarcom still have descendants living here. Longtime residents will remember local landmarks such as Appert Field, Turtle Pond, Harned's Store, Zabriskie Field, and Lemmerman Farm. Evidenced by the many houses of worship, volunteer organizations, and long-running celebrations like the Memorial Day parade, Wyckoff has maintained its rustic charm and community pride while growing into a popular northern New Jersey locale.
