Regular price $24.99 Sale price $18.74 Save 25%Maine has its share of industry, some current and some obsolete. Over the last century, many industrial practices have grown and flourished while others have vanished entirely. Likewise, state institutions have seen vast changes in their structures and methods of operation.
Changes to our industry and institutions have left behind artifacts of a bygone era. Many of these artifacts are demolished, replaced, or vanish further into obscurity. This book offers a visual tour of our forgotten past and practices in hopes of preserving history to prevent it from vanishing entirely. Readers will explore an abandoned jail built in 1873 (in which its first prisoner was convicted of killing two people with an axe), the North Maine Woods in search of ghost trains abandoned in the wilderness close to a century ago, and more.
Forgotten Industry and Institutions of Maine contains images, interesting facts, personal anecdotes, and the stories that make these places unique and give them their distinctive character.
Abandoned Maine

Regular price $23.99 Sale price $17.99 Save 25%In Abandoned Maine, Michael Petipas captures the state's past through a collection of photographs. Through this visual journey, readers can explore the beauty that has been left behind in the wreckage of places that time and people have forgotten.
Abandoned locations always have a story to tell. Some were once giants of industry that slowly became obsolete and were eventually forced to close their doors for good. Other places are of great historical significance. Some places the locals remember fondly, and they continue to live among them as they slowly decay year after year. Then there are the places that keep their secrets, and the cause of their decay is left to the imagination.
All the locations in this book have been left to sit empty and slowly give way to the rains of spring, the heat of summer, and the cold of winter. One day, these old structures will be no more than a pile of bones and a distant memory for the few people that remember them.

Small Wonder

Regular price $23.99 Sale price $17.99 Save 25%Small Point is a village within the town of Phippsburg, near the site of the first European settlement of 1607. The setting is spectacular: three miles of Seawall Beach to the east, and Small Point Harbor and Hermit Island to the west. It was the home of two of Maine's governors, Bodwell and Sewall. Residents are a mix of old families going back to 1750 and members of the summer community, dating from 1880--two close-knit and very different communities. The author spent summers there from birth and is now a year-round resident. He knew many of the people in this book.
Tom Hinkle is a professional artist, and this book is illustrated with his Small Point scenes and with old photographs. When not painting or writing, he restores historic houses. This book contains his thoughts about architecture, covering three centuries. It is his history as well as that of Small Point.
