The original document--one of the United States' first governing documents--was passed by the Continental Congress in 1777, and later ratified by the states in 1781. Though the Articles of Confederation was not successful in creating a strong federal government, it did establish a set of rules for politics and governance that do--in some ways--still persist today. This document was replaced by the U.S. Constitution in 1789.

For Adults Only! The Blue Book is a reproduction of the most famous guidebook to New Orleans's brothels. Published from 1909 to 1915 by former police reporter Billy Struve, the Blue Book promised to "put the stranger on a proper and safe path." This fascinating look at New Orleans in the early 1900s, alphabetically lists the women in categories "white," "octaroon," "colored," and "late arrivals." It also includes a list of the names of women entertainers who were employed in the dance halls and cabarets in the Storyville district--closed down by the government in 1917--"the only district of its kind set aside for the fast women by law." Applewood After Dark's faithful facsimile, reproduced from an original copy owned by Judith Lafitte of Octavia Books, includes all of the original advertisements, including those for alcoholic beverages, cigars, and legal counsel. Also, in the book, we've left a simple checkmark, an editorial comment made by a previous owner.

Once in a great while an important artifact is suddenly recognized as being so valuable that it demands a wide and immediate audience. Citizen USA, from the permanent collection of the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is such an artifact. The unpublished book was written in 1943 when the author, Charles Ferguson, was the Director of Adult Education at the Manzanar concentration camp where Japanese Americans were incarcerated. In words and photographs, the story chronicles the camp experience through the voice and perspective of a young sansei girl from Hollywood, California. She describes the routine of camp life as well as the fear and uncertainty about the future that she and her family face. At the book's conclusion she wonders, "Isn't America still democratic?" Produced in the form of a photo album, the unpublished work was never forgotten by the Ferguson family. After the author's death, his wife Lois donated the book to JANM in 2003. Seeing hard truths and difficult circumstances from a child's point of view is more powerful than ever before. This story will resonate with audiences unimagined in 1943.

Portions of letters sent home to Concord, Massachusetts were collected and published as Hospital Sketches in 1863. In this excerpt, Alcott writes of the final days of a Virginia blacksmith named John: "The only time I saw his composure disturbed, was when my surgeon brought another to examine John, who scrutinized their faces with an anxious look, asking of the elder: 'Do you think I will pull through, sir?'"
