More Info on This Book: Bend
New from Arcadia Publishing and the local Deschutes County Historical Society is Bend in the popular Images of America series, featuring over 200 vintage images. Also available is a companion piece, 15 loose postcards capturing images from the book.
Bend, astride the Deschutes River at the eastern foot of the Cascade Range, got its name from a place on the river that runs through it. Pioneer travelers called the place Farewell Bend because it was where they had their last view of the double bend in the river that afforded a good place to camp and to ford the waterway, otherwise flowing through deep canyons.
Author royalties from the sale of this book will go to the Deschutes County Historical Society to support its museum and programs.
Highlights of Bend:
• Includes the arrival of a railroad in 1911, which connected Bend with a market for Central Oregon’s vast timber resources
• Features the large sawmills which began operations in 1916 and caused Bend to grow tenfold within the next 10 years
• Explores Bend’s centennial in 2005
• Explains why the U.S. Post Office Department approved Bend’s shortened name for a post office established there in 1886
