Madison’s History Told Through Vintage Postcards
- 10/26/2009

More Info on This Book: Madison

Madison has a rich photographic history, much of it in the form of postcards. The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Postcard History series, Madison presents more than 200 historical postcard images from the private collection of Madison resident John Powell, who has been collecting and trading postcards for more than 20 years. Madison also has a postcard companion packet with 15 loose postcards.

The images in the book reflect Madison's businesses, public institutions, civic life and pride in the first decades of the 20th century. With local author David Sakrison's engaging text, these images offer a unique window into the city as it was, and as it saw itself, 75 to 100 years ago.

The author hopes that the book will “open a unique window into Madison’s past and become a worthy keepsake for Madisonians, UW students and alumni, and visitors to the Four Lakes area.”

Highlights of Madison:
• Several of the postcards have never before been published in any book or periodical.
• The book offers a capsule history of Madison’s growth from a frontier village with aspirations to a vibrant center of commerce, education and government.
• Railroads both spurred and hobbled Madison’s development. The book highlights the railroad’s influence, good and bad, on the city.
