Biloxi is one of Mississippi’s best-known cities, and its 300-year history has long fascinated those who live, work, visit or are stationed in the coastal city because of the military.
A pictorial slice of that history, from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century, is depicted in the new book, “Biloxi.”
This latest in the “Images of America” pictorial series by Arcadia Publishing is the work of Jamie Bounds Ellis and Jane B. Shambra. They are two Biloxi-based librarians who oversee the Murella H. Powell History & Genealogy Collection of the Harrison County Library System.
More than 200 vintage photographs, from the building of what is now Biloxi’s City Hall to visits by President Harry S. Truman and Jayne Mansfield, visually tell the story of Biloxi’s growth as well as its challenges.
Ellis also contributed photographs she took after Hurricane Katrina, which inundated the library, to keep the history in perspective. All the other photographs and old post cards come from the library collection, which was created from public donations.
The two librarians hope “Biloxi” will help shine a light on the local history collection they oversee. Some documents were lost in the 2005 storm and the history library is in a temporary downtown location, but the ever-increasing collection remains available to the public and researchers.
