More Info on This Book: Cleburne
New from Arcadia Publishing and local author, Mollie Mims, is Cleburne, the latest volume in the popular Images of America series.
Once known for its cotton production and Jersey cows, Cleburne has evolved from its agricultural heritage into a diverse community. This former Civil War training camp, located near Buffalo Creek, was named for Confederate general Patrick Cleburne when it became the county seat in 1867. From early opera and movie houses, saloons, and congested trade days, to live theaters, parks, and modern industries, Cleburne continues to progress. Today a new economy and booming growth have emerged due to the Barnett Shale gas exploration.
Mims hopes to rekindle the memories of places, people and events of the Cleburne community with this new book and to give other generations a glimpse into the past.
Highlights of Cleburne:
• More than half of the images used are from the rare Layland Museum collection.
• Chronicles Cleburne from early days of being named in honor of General Patrick Cleburne to 2009.
• Features several types of early transportation, including an interurban rail system connecting North Texas cities and Cleburne as well as a local electric street car system.
