More Info on This Book: Liberty County
Since the arrival of Spanish explorers, colonists and missionaries in the early 1500s, Liberty County has been a microcosm of American history. The county and her citizens have played significant roles in every period from the Civil War and Reconstruction to the civil rights movement and the Iraq War. From the sparkling waves lapping on St. Catherine's Island and the mysteriously beautiful tidewater to the piney sandhills of Hinesville and Fort Stewart, the land of Liberty has provided history with a dramatic backdrop.
In a new pictorial history book by local author Meredith R. Devendorf, over 200 vintage photographs honor this coastal community nestled midway between Savannah and Darien.
The author hopes the book will “spark curiosity about the past and help people recognize their part in an eternally unfolding story.”
Highlights of Liberty County:
• Liberty County is only one of Georgia’s 159 counties not named for a person or group of people
• Liberty County got its name for its critical role in the American Revolution
• The book includes rare images of the aftermath of the Sea Island Hurricane of 1893
• The book features images of the erstwhile community of Taylor’s Creek, destroyed to make way for Fort Stewart
