| Elbert County Middle School teacher Aurolyn Hamm talks to students in her eighth-grade earl science class on Friday. Ms. Hamm recently published a book on black history in Elbert County. |
One room in Aurolyn Melba Hamm’s house is littered with pictures.
The newly published author wishes she’d been more organized as she compiled information and pictures for her book, "Elbert County, Georgia," that chronicles black history in the county.
"I had stuff everywhere," Ms. Hamm said with a laugh. "It’s still everywhere."
The book, which is the newest title in the Black America Series from Arcadia Publishing, started with the eighth-grade science teacher tracking the genealogy of her family, which has been in Elbert County since the days of slavery, she said.
She couldn’t find much black history at the library, and when her sister found a book in the Black America Series she decided to send the publisher a book proposal sheet.
In all, it took four months before she had the book in her hands.
"I called everybody I knew," Ms. Hamm said.
Divided into six chapters, the book chronicles local leaders, churches, education, people who serve their community, politics and community.
"I was trying to get across the fact that the blacks in this area had a big struggle ahead of them but they didn’t give up, they persevered," she said.
Pictures and information for the book came from Ms. Hamm’s and local residents’ personal collections and the Jim-Ree African-American Museum.
"I’m indebted to a lot of people," Ms. Hamm said.
Books in the Black America Series are meant to highlight the history and accomplishments of local communities, which is overlooked in regional and national textbooks, Arcadia Publicity Manager Sara San Angelo said.
"It’s their history and it’s something the generations can read," she said.
The series that has about 100 titles, Ms. Angelo said.
Ms. Hamm teaches eighth-grade earth science and a reading class at Elbert County Middle School. She has been signing copies of her book for people but said she hasn’t checked it out on the shelf in the local bookstore yet.
"It’s exciting for me," she said.
