Arcadia Publishing: Sustainability Leader in the Publishing Industry
Arcadia Publishing is the nation's first major book publisher to achieve the use of 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
certified paper across its entire book publishing program.
As of August 2009, all new releases and reprints carry the accredited FSC logo. FSC recognized products are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
Consistent with Arcadia Publishing's mission to preserve history on a local level, books are printed on USA made paper and manufactured entirely in the USA.

Arcadia Publishing FSC Program Frequently Asked Questions
• Why is FSC important?
Arcadia Publishing is the FIRST major publisher in US history to adopt the use of FSC certified paper at a
100% level.
With the implementation of 100 percent FSC certified paper; Arcadia Publishing has surpassed the goals set for
industry standards as indentified in The Book Industry Treatise on Responsible Paper Use by 500 percent, and
almost two years ahead of schedule. The treaty, developed in 2006 by a wide range of industry stakeholders and
coordinated by the Green Press Initiative (GPI), calls for certified paper to a level of 20 percent by 2012.

• What is FSC?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a not for profit independent, non-governmental, international
organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Products carrying the
FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet
the social, economic, and ecological needs of present and future generations.
Fiber from certified forests is tracked all the way to the consumer through the chain of custody certification
system. This means forests, pulp providers, mills, merchants and printers must all obtain FSC certification in
order for a product to carry the FSC logo or label.
The idea behind the FSC is simple: bring together representatives from environmental, social and business
communities to work together on appropriate standards for managing forests to ensure that logging is carried out
according to the best available science and with the highest regard for the ecological, social and cultural well-
being of the region.

• Why FSC?
The FSC is recognized as having the highest certification standards available today.
Carrying the FSC-certification logo on our print products tells the world that we support the highest social and
environmental standards. Customers who purchase FSC-certified paper and print products contribute to
conservation, responsible management, and community level benefits for people near the forests that provide
our paper.
The FSC certification system is acknowledged to be far more rigorous than any other existing certification
program and this demanding set of standards has resulted in wide support from major environmental groups.
Greenpeace cites the FSC as "the only credible global certification system" and other trusted environmental
organizations supporting FSC include the National Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club,
and World Wildlife Fund.

• Is Arcadia Publishing FSC Certified?
In order to use the FSC logo as an "environmental claim," the product must have flowed through the FSC "chain-of-custody" process: from the FSC-certified forest, to a paper manufacturer, merchant, and finally the printer who have FSC chain-of-custody certification. The “FSC Mixed Sources” chain-of-custody certification mark printed on our products is not owned by Arcadia Publishing, rather it has been granted to our printer who adds it to our books for us.
In an effort to share our FSC program initiatives in our promotional materials, the FSC trademark department reviewed and endorsed our program initiatives and has granted us the use of an exclusive FSC ID code. This endorsement allows us to include the FSC logo and copyright claim in promotional materials such as press releases and on our website in a manner that clearly indicates our products are FSC certified.
