As one of the nation’s oldest communities, Plymouth presents a unique mixture of authentic antiquity and invented tradition. In this 1921 real-photo postcard, residents reenact the procession of Pilgrim settlers to their fortified meetinghouse for Sunday worship. The custom was instituted during the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ landing and has been regularly carried out ever since on Thanksgiving Day and selected summer dates.
