William Brooksher is a retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general. A resident of Richland, Washington, he is a frequent contributor to several historical journals. He is also the author of Bloody Hill: The Civil War Battle of Wilsonís Creek. A native of Arkansas, Brooksher enlisted in the Air Force in 1950. In 1953, he entered Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He earned a bachelorís degree from the University of Colorado in 1958 and a masterís degree from the University of Missouri in 1970. Brooksher was promoted to brigadier general in 1978 and retired from the Air Force in 1981. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. Brooksher was inspired to write Glory at a Gallop in 1969, during a conversation with his colleague David K. Snider. Both men shared an interest in the leadership of the Confederate cavalry. They coauthored numerous articles on the subject before cowriting Glory at a Gallop in 1993.
