Bright lights, big city. No, this is not Chicago or Los Angeles. This is Jersey City, the second largest city in New Jersey. You haven't seen Jersey like this. The twinkle of the string lights downtown, the pop of green growth between the rounded stones of the cobblestone streets, the neon that lights food trucks and pharmacies are just some of the sites of the eclectic city that is Jersey City. Join author and photographer, Alex Gulino, as she photographs "Chilltown" in attempt to capture the essence of the historical yet bustling city. As new skyscrapers are erected, is there still room in this urban landscape for homes that are nearly 300 years old? Can its booming art scene make Jersey City the new Brooklyn? As the past meets the present, come see the people and the visuals of Chilltown and the vibrancy that is the incomparable Jersey City.

Alex Gulino, author of Empire State of Decay: Discarded New York and Garden State of Decay: Discarded New Jersey, has been documenting her adventures since 2017. Her love of photography began in her teens when her father purchased her first camera and was later solidified when Alex won her first photography contest for a local newspaper. While in college, Alex considered majoring in photography-alas, theater arts won out. While she put photography on hold to pursue an acting career, she never forgot her first love. After traveling the U.S. more often, Alex noticed many amazing sights that just needed to be photographed. Her first love was reignited, and photography was once again a significant part of her life. Today, Alex travels as often as she can and participates in various art shows throughout the NJ and NY area. To see more of Alex's work, visit or see her on Instagram @starletlexy.
