Located in northern Middlesex County, South Plainfield has a rich and fascinating history. It was first settled by the Lenape and later by immigrants from Scotland, England, and the Netherlands. Mills were built, and by the 18th century, it was home to numerous farms and two hamlets: Samptown and New Brooklyn. During the American Revolution, skirmishes shook the sleepy community. The 19th century brought the arrival of railroads and industry. The 20th century saw South Plainfield transformed. The Lehigh Valley Railroad built an enormous coal storage yard. Spicer Manufacturing opened a factory manufacturing universal joints for early trucks and cars. Harris Steel, a fabricator of steel for bridges and skyscrapers, constructed a sprawling plant in South Plainfield. After World War II, the borough grew by leaps and bounds as new suburban developments replaced farms and fields. Today, South Plainfield is a strong community with a diverse population located at the crossroads of central New Jersey.

Lawrence Park and Wesleyville

Lawrence Park Township and Wesleyville Borough are suburbs of Erie, Pennsylvania, and both communities are proud of their comfortable residences, many churches, parks, and business districts. Wesleyville grew along Buffalo Road, while Lawrence Park was developed by the General Electric Company a century later. Four Mile Creek, with its picturesque wanderings, is shared by both communities, and local legend suggests that it might have played a part in the Underground Railroad and the activities of rumrunners. In the early 1960s, the rival schools of the two communities merged to form the Iroquois School District. Amazingly, in 1965-1966, the first year of the merged district, the football team won the Erie County league championship. When the Henry Belin Jr. Waverly Community House and Park was dedicated in 1920, Margaretta E. Belin intended both to honor her husband and benefit residents of Abington Township. The community house was envisioned by its progressive donor as the educational, cultural, and social heart of rural Waverly. By 1930, when Margaretta and Henry's six children added land and two wings to the original building in honor of their mother, chautauquas, concerts, clubs, sports teams, and Scout troops were filling the annual calendar of events. On site, a post office provided mail delivery, a canteen supplied merchandise from ammonia to pencils, and residents of Dalton, Factoryville, Clarks Summit, and Clarks Green pumped gasoline. No activity, however, was more celebrated both locally and regionally than the annual fair that united Waverly in purpose, labor, and pleasure at summer's end. Since its inception, the Waverly Community House has set and achieved ambitious goals to enrich community life, a mission that successive generations have strived to follow.
