Fannin County

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%When Fannin County was created in January of 1854, less than 20 years had passed since the Texas Revolution, but its impact was immense.
War hero James Walker Fannin was born, if legend is correct, near where Tennessee and North Carolina border Georgia; after dropping out of West Point, Fannin was a successful broker in Columbus, Georgia, and then immigrated to Texas. Following several military adventures, including a failed attempt to relieve the Alamo, Colonel Fannin was defeated at the Battle of Coleto Creek, and his command massacred near Goliad. Shortly after the Mexican-American War won the Texas territory for the Union, Georgia honored Fannin's memory by naming Fannin County for him. From an isolated region of mountain farms, gristmills, and wilderness, Fannin County has developed alongside the arrival of the railroad and the inauguration of logging, hydroelectric power, mining, and manufacturing and is currently one of the premier tourist destinations and arts-and-crafts regions in the Southeast.

Former DJ Bill Lowery attracted a galaxy of talent and created an empire of music publishing, production and promotion. In 1956, the Lowery Music Company had its first million copy-selling hit single with "Be-Bop-a-Lula,'? by Gene Vincent. Under Lowery's direction, popular artists like Tommy Roe and Billy Joe Royal flourished. Audio engineer Rodney Mills teamed up with Lowery and future Atlanta Rhythm Section manager Buddy Buie to build Studio One, a recording studio that produced albums from legendary acts such as Joe South, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and others. Andy Lee White and John M. Williams offer a comprehensive portrait of the vibrant postwar Atlanta music scene.

Historic Bonaventure Cemetery
9780738542010
Regular price $23.99 Sale price $16.79 Save 30%While every cemetery has its own collection of stories, Savannah's Bonaventure Cemetery has an overflowing bounty of rich, enthralling tales to tell.
Each neatly laid out plot, each lichen-dotted headstone, each lovingly crafted monument, is a representation of a personal history. For more than 150 years, citizens of Savannah have buried their loved ones at Bonaventure Cemetery. Among its grounds, monuments bearing the names of such famous people as Johnny Mercer lie alongside markers bearing names of those known only to their family. Bonaventure's stately beauty seems the perfect setting for a cemetery. Historic Bonaventure Cemetery illustrates the development of Bonaventure as a Victorian-style cemetery and the
transformation from a private estate to a public cemetery. Historic Bonaventure Cemetery, the first book solely about Bonaventure, includes images of Bonaventure and Greenwich - the two plantations that became Bonaventure - and provides information about the people and the monuments there.

Within these pages, the story of Jekyll's transformation unfolds. Historic photographs of the island, its early residents, and devoted beachcombers recall the early days when the island was accessed only by ferry and when the elite club reopened as a hotel. Included are images of the island's continued development, prompted by the 1950 formation of the Jekyll Island Authority, which remains today as the island's governing entity. Hotels, parks, restaurants, golf courses, and a host of other attractions are featured in this unique retrospective.
Barrow County
9780738506272
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%Like all professional photographers of their time, Stell and Kilgore did portrait work, weddings, and commercial photography; however, they took their art several steps beyond the usual. In a time when most families did not own a camera, the two men photographed children's birthday parties, Easter egg hunts, and family reunions. Rather than spending Christmas morning with their own families, they spent that time going to the homes of families throughout the community, gathered around the Christmas tree opening gifts. Perhaps even more important from a historical standpoint was their coverage of breaking news events. Their files contain hundreds of photos of automobile accidents and train wrecks, many taken for the local newspaper and others for various insurance companies and lawyers. Stell and Kilgore also served as the forensic photographers for local law enforcement agencies, and photographed in great detail the crime scene of murders in Barrow County for decades.

Forgotten Pieces of Georgia
9781634992787
Regular price $23.99 Sale price $16.79 Save 30%Forgotten Pieces of Georgia: The Northwest Counties documents the abandoned small business buildings throughout the state. By carefully documenting as many buildings as possible while obtaining accurate historical information, this book seeks to raise awareness to the plight of small businesses not only in Georgia, but in the United States as a whole.
As humankind constantly changes and evolves, alongside technology and "progress," we do not consider how this rapid change affects the small business owners in our local, county, and state communities. Some small businesses can specialize in niche markets like small engine repair or landscaping, but others--such as small "mom-and-pop" stores, gas stations, or hardware stores--are forced out of business by larger box store chains.
Other small businesses, such as textile companies, can be forced out by bad decisions on the part of politicians who regulate companies to death or make it impossible to compete in a fair market. We tend to forget the United States was built by the small business owner, whether they were fur traders and farmers in the early days or general stores and retail stores through the late 1990s. Humankind must continue to move forward, but not at the expense of our small businesses and local communities.

responded. Thousands came for the festivals, which were said to rival Mardi Gras and California's Rose Festival, and which even attracted the attention of National Geographic and Hollywood movie studios.

North Georgia is home to more than its fair share of ghosts, from scenic antebellum mansions to restaurants, mills and even an outhouse. The night watchman at an Elberton cotton mill became acquainted with three haunting visitors in his four decades at the mill. Hikers on Lookout Mountain were surprised to discover a mysterious house eerily decorated with magical symbols and bones. Author Jim Miles reveals the most terrifying ghost stories from each county in the region.

St. Marys and Camden County

St. Marys was born, and its street names reflect the surnames of the 20 founding fathers. While the county seat was removed from a quaint St. Marys on more than one occasion, today, the garden spot of Woodbine serves as the seat of county government. Formerly the rice plantation of J.K. Bedell, this small city shares a symbiotic relationship with port of St. Marys and the "City of Royal Treatment" at Kingsland. The history of the county, with its three main towns as well as the outlying, rural areas, unfolds in striking photographs from days gone by. Preserved within the pages of this treasured volume, images reveal Camden and its people in times of tragedy and triumph.

Union general William T. Sherman cemented Savannah's most notable Civil War connection when he ended his "March to the Sea" there in December 1864. However, more fascinating stories from the era lurk behind the city's ancient, moss-draped live oaks. A full-scale naval battle raged between ironclad warships just offshore. More than seven thousand prisoners were confined in the area surrounding Forsyth Park. And on March 21, 1861, the present-day Savannah Theatre was the site of one of the most inflammatory and controversial speeches of the entire war. Noted local filmmaker and author Michael Jordan delves deep into this fabled city's Civil War past.

While many small towns in the South have been burned, bulldozed, or transformed by industry and development, Newnan retains much of its 19th-century charm and elegance, including more than a dozen restored antebellum homes and a 1904 courthouse on the downtown square. The town produced two of Georgia's most progressive governors and provided writer Erskine Caldwell with his earliest, formative memories. Newnan is the small town that country music singer (and native son) Alan Jackson immortalized in his hit song ""Little Man""; in these pages, readers will see the ""old Lee King's apothecary"" and other downtown buildings that Jackson found so inspiring during his childhood.
