At the turn of the 20th century, the town of Hamden, Connecticut, "the Land of the Sleeping Giant," was a patchwork of small hamlets, largely rural and agricultural. During the next 100 years, it would undergo a dramatic transformation; as orchards and fields gave way to factories and subdivisions, Hamden's population grew from only a few thousand at the beginning of the century to over 60,000. In the time of war needs, local industries like the Web Shop factory and High Standard Manufacturing retooled to meet demands. The middle of the century saw the appearance of some of the first shopping malls in the state, including Hamden Plaza. Major universities attracted workers, families, intellects, and authors. Hamden was the childhood home of poet laureate Donald Hall, the residence of playwright Thornton Wilder, and the birthplace of Ernest Borgnine. As the town's diversity grew, the community faced the challenges and opportunities of each generation and, inevitably, its identity evolved.

During the early 1700s, Brookfield was first colonized
in an area occupied by the Pootatuck Indians. Hat,
shear, and comb factories arose along the Still River,
enticing settlers, who built farms, churches, and inns. In
1752, land was taken from New Milford, Newtown, and
Danbury to form the Parish of Newbury. By 1788, the town
was incorporated as Brookfield in honor of the area's first
ordained pastor, Rev. Thomas Brooks.
The
town quickly outgrew its horse-and-buggy paths
and one-room schoolhouses. In 1927, Candlewood
Lake was born out of area farmland, flooded to form
the largest man-made lake in Connecticut. Brookfield
depicts the settlement of the area and highlights notable
natives, including Lucia Ruggles Holman, the first
American woman to circumnavigate the globe, and
Sarah Jane Campbell, P.T. Barnum's famous fat lady.

Incorporated in 1795, Plymouth is known for its industrialists and innovations. A. Terry & Company was a pioneer in the industry of malleable iron, and Eli Terry was instrumental in the creation of interchangeable parts leading to mass production. Cooper Oven Thermometer designed and created the first baking thermometers in the United States. Plymouth is also home to two sections of historic importance listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Plymouth Center, known as the initial center of town with locations on the Underground Railroad, and East Church, where a small group of Tories lived during the Revolutionary War.

Established in 1705, the town of Groton is geographically located between the Thames and Mystic Rivers in the southeastern corner of Connecticut. The town is comprised of eight separate subdivision communities that are referred to as fire districts. Groton is also the home to a large naval submarine base, a small general aviation airport, and several major industrial facilities, including the Electric Boat Corporation and Pfizer, Inc. West Haven's history has revolved around its four-mile Long Island shorefront since the days when Dutch settlers first saw the white shell mounds of Native American oystermen. Halfway between Boston and New York is a little town now called Clinton, located in Connecticut, whose history includes Dr. Seuss, Yale College and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The small shoreline town 25 miles east of New Haven was founded in 1663 when a committee appointed by the General Court at Hartford laid out a settlement called the Homonoscitt Plantation. In 1838, following multiple name changes during the intervening years, it came to be known as Clinton. Clinton was the birthplace of Yale College in 1701; the hometown of choice for a family and their performing bears, who, for years, headlined with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey; and the place where Dr. Seuss spent his summers.

Bethlehem

Settled in 1734, Bethlehem is a typical Litchfield hill town and retains much of its rural charm. Around its green are an old post tavern at the Woodward House, two historic churches, and the Bellamy-Ferriday House and Garden. Rev. Joseph Bellamy came to Bethlehem in 1738 and stayed to establish the first theological school in the country, educating Aaron Burr, James Morris, and later John C. Calhoun. In 1938, postmaster Earl Johnson designed a rubber stamp to adorn cards sent from the post office attached to his family's general store. This first cachet became an annual project and established Bethlehem as "the Christmas town." In 1946, two Benedictine nuns came to stay with artist Lauren Ford while establishing the Abbey of Regina Laudis in a factory donated by local businessman Robert Leather. Every September for the last 85 years, the Bethlehem Fair has welcomed more than 60,000 people to apple pies and horse draws at its scenic fairgrounds.
