When Schererville was platted in 1866, founder and namesake Nicholas Scherer could not have imagined it becoming one of the "100 Best Places to Live in the U.S." That distinction was bestowed in 2007 by Money magazine. By then, its population had soared from 25 families to over 25,000 residents and surrounding areas had been incorporated. By its 2016 sesquicentennial, the expanding schools included a middle school, three elementary schools, and three private schools. As part of the Tri-Town area, Schererville students attend high school in St. John, where student enrollment now exceeds Schererville's entire centennial population in 1966. Growth is partly attributed to the major highway routes often based on Indian trails crisscrossing the region. Over 900 businesses operate in Schererville today, bringing with them jobs, goods, services, and prosperity. Schererville's humble beginnings and enduring title as "Crossroads of the Nation" are explained through this portrait of early settlers, government accomplishments, and the contributions of its citizens.

The Dutch in the Calumet Region

The first Dutch immigration to the Calumet Region took place in the second half of the 19th century. The area settled by the Dutch spans roughly from what today is part of Chicago's Southside to the western border of Griffith, Indiana, and includes the communities of Roseland, South Holland, Lansing, Munster, and Highland. Once in the region, the Dutch carved communities out of the wilderness by clearing and draining the land and raising large families; descendants of these immigrants still populate the region. Even before the towns existed and on into the 20th century, the Dutch were a community that transcended the borders they established. Evidence of the early settlers is found all around the Calumet Region. It is in the churches they built, the businesses they started, and the loved ones they buried.

Founded in 1858, Tell City is located in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, along the Ohio River between Evansville, Indiana, and Louisville, Kentucky. Carefully planned by the Swiss Colonization Society of Cincinnati, Ohio, Tell City was originally named Helvetia. To proclaim their Swiss origin and honor their hero, William Tell, the founders chose to rename the area Tell City. Tell City is known for its famous Tell City Pretzels, a tradition that dates back to 1858, and the Tell City Chair Company, a well-known manufacturer of Early American-style furniture. After the closing of the Tell City Chair Company, the city changed from a furniture-manufacturing community to a more automotive-manufacturing community, with Waupaca and ATTC Manufacturing both employing a total of 1,500 people.

Albion and Noble County

Named after Indiana's first US senator, Noble County was formed in 1836, just eight years after the first recorded white settlers arrived and 20 years after Indiana's formation. Settlements grew with transportation: a trail from Fort Wayne became the now-historic Lincoln Highway; the Sylvan Lake dam, built to supply a proposed canal, attracted author Gene Stratton Porter; and railroads arrived. Each time the population grew and shifted until the citizens voted to place the county seat in "The Center," the geographic center of Noble County. Soon, Albion occupied the space, making it the smallest township in America.
