LaRue County

In 1843, LaRue County was named after John LaRue, an early settler in the area. Hodgenville, the county's largest town, was established in 1818 and later became the seat in 1843. LaRue County is best known as the birthplace and childhood home of Abraham Lincoln; he was born on February 12, 1809, at the Sinking Spring Farm. In 1909, in honor of Lincoln's centennial birthday, New York sculptor Adolph A. Weinmann created a life-size statue of the 16th president, which still stands in the Hodgenville square. Firefighting in Hopkinsville

Organized in 1832, the Hopkinsville Union Fire Company represented the first attempt to provide fire protection for the town of Hopkinsville, which had 1,260 residents at that time. Succeeding volunteer groups (called runners) were created through the remainder of the 19th century. By 1900, a paid, professional fire department had been established with the firemen and equipment housed in the old town market house at the intersection of Fifth and Main Streets. Five years later, the City of Hopkinsville completed the new Central Fire Station located on East Ninth Street between Liberty and Clay Streets. In October 1924, the destruction of this building by fire generated widespread comment. A new station was built within the original walls of the burned building. This facility served as the Hopkinsville Fire Station until the department moved to the new Main Station on West First Street in May 1964.

Northern Kentucky University

In 1948, the University of Kentucky opened a branch campus in a few rented classrooms in a Northern Kentucky elementary school. This northern center evolved to become a full-fledged member of Kentucky's community college system. In January 1820, the acting governor of Kentucky, Gabriel Slaughter, signed a bill put before him by the state's legislature to create a new county from portions of Christian and Caldwell Counties in Western Kentucky.

Trigg County was named to honor Revolutionary Warsoldier and Native American fighter Col. Stephen Trigg. Organization of the county government commenced on May 15, 1820, at the home of Samuel Orr in the community of Warrenton. Justices of the Peace Boyd, Wadlington, Goode, Orr, Scott, Slaughter, Daniel, Fowler, and Dawson swore one another into office and set about the business of the new county. The village of Cadiz, located along the banks of Little River, was soon established as the county seat.

Dayton's history has been shaped and reshaped by its location on the banks of the Ohio River. Campbellsville University is a Christian institution whose mission is focused on scholarship, leadership, and fellowship. This volume chronologically documents the evolution of the institution, beginning with its humble origins during the early 20th century. In 1906, the Russell Creek Association of Baptists purchased 10 acres of land, which became the campus of the Russell Creek Academy. Elementary and secondary school classes were offered in September 1907, as was training for teachers.

Campbellsville Junior College was established in 1924. Despite the school becoming a college, elementary and secondary school students continued to be educated there until 1941. Campbellsville College began offering a four-year higher education program in 1959. The institution achieved university status in 1996. Today a majority of the students attend classes on the 75-acre campus located in the heart of Campbellsville, Kentucky.
