A prosperous deepwater shipping port on the south shore of Long Island, Sag Harbor was in its heyday as a whaling village in the early 1800s. By 1850, whaling was unprofitable, petroleum had been discovered, and the 1849 Gold Rush led to an exodus. As Sag Harbor fell into economic decline, the arrival of the railroad helped reinvigorate it as a factory town, bringing Fahys Watchcase, Alvin Silver, Bliss torpedo testing, and Bulova, until those industries shuttered. The silver lining to Sag Harbor's boom and bust has been the preservation of its heritage. The grand homes of captains and whaleship owners, tradesmen's cottages, and factory houses were untouched for years, attracting a wave of artists, writers, and weekenders. This fine collection of 18th- and 19th-century homes and public buildings placed the village in the National Register of Historic Places, drawing tourists to walk in the footsteps of Native Americans, colonists, whalers, and resident-writers James Fenimore Cooper and John Steinbeck and to visit the village's war monuments and museums and charming Main Street.

The city saw astounding growth during the industrial age which brought not only a flood of new enterprises and commerce but also elegant homes, cobblestone streets, gaslights, and trolley cars. Schenectady also contributed to the development of the nation: the Monitor's turret, M7 tanks, and World War II radio and radar equipment were produced here.

Even in its early days, Rochester had multiple neighborhoods, small settlements with names such as Swillburg, Goat Hill and the Butter Bowl. Later, thanks to the Eastman Kodak Company and the Xerox Corporation, Rochester became the ""Picture City"" and the ""World's Image Centre."" Rochester was a haven on the Underground Railroad between 1830 and 1860. Always an ethnic city, it became a hotbed for inventors, reformers, educators, and spiritual leaders. Its leaders were independent, sometimes outrageous, outspoken, colorful, and courageous. Many were women-foremost among them was Susan Brownell Anthony.

First established in 1870 as a teaching college for women, Hunter College of the City of New York has provided exceptional education to all peoples for over a century.

Providing experiential learning opportunities from the very start, the college has successfully fostered many generations of students with its challenging and cutting-edge curriculum. Founder Dr. Thomas Hunter, an Irish immigrant, insisted that the school admit people of all races, religions, and ethnicities, despite segregation laws in the early years. In the 1920s, Hunter College began opening branch campuses in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. During World War II, the Bronx campus was used by the U.S. Navy as a training center for over 95,000 female volunteers for military service as WAVES and SPARS, and in 1946, it was the first site for the United Nations sessions. Over the years, alumni of Hunter have gone on to careers in politics, education, social work, medicine, media, and many other fields. Graduates have included Fulbright and Mellon Fellows and Nobel prizewinners. Inexorably, the nature of the local communities changed beyond recognition. The world of the late 1800s and early 1900s was lost forever.

In the spring of 1962, Captain Nathaniel Sylvester and his young bride, Grissel Brinley, stepped from their boat onto the narrow shore along Gardiners Creek.
