Murder & Mayhem in Columbus, Ohio

Every city's history has its dark underbelly of crime. Columbus is no exception. From the turn of the century to the dawn of World War I, scandals involving an opium den and a sadistic murderer rocked a respectable downtown community. Around the same time, a cop killer masterminded a plot to free himself from the Franklin County jail by having his gang attempt to blow the place up with nitroglycerin. In 1946, dead bodies kept popping up after a prim, young teacher disappeared from a quiet Grandview Heights neighborhood. Two years later, a middle-aged housewife was killed with a butcher knife the same day that a tattooed mystery woman was found knifed to death in a downtown hotel.

""I've always believed that New Concord and Muskingum College are the center of the universe, because if you get your start here, you can go anywhere."" This quote from John Herschel Glenn Jr. is the perfect summation of a wonderfully Midwestern town that produced one of the great American citizens of all time. The Village of New Concord, founded in 1828, had humble enough beginnings. Over the course of the next century and a half, however, the growth of the entire country was played out on New Concord's stage as residents faced a series of revolutionary frontiers: Zane's Trace, the National Road, U.S. Route 40, Interstate 70, and finally, space. New Concord, like the rest of the country, struggled through two world wars, the Great Depression, and social turmoil. Unlike the rest of the country, it also produced a hero.

"Paul Krupp was a friend of mine. He may not have known it, but I knew his writings very well. I read all of his material that he had printed in our local Fostoria Review Times. He would write about an old neighborhood of his, and then take a "walk" down the street, without missing a house, and tell you who lived there, and the makeup of each respective family. . . . this gives me the opportunity of speaking of the great admiration I had for him. If Paul Krupp wrote something, it was true."
-Mel Murray, former owner, WFOB Curator emeritus, Fostoria, Ohio Glass Heritage Gallery
"I thoroughly enjoyed reading Paul Krupp's columns in the Fostoria Reveiw Times when they appeared. His recounting the history of Fostoria in his columns explained the past and also helped to explain why some present situations exist, which was very beneficial as the mayor."
-Barbara L. Marley, Mayor, 1990-95
"The always interesting, informative columns of Paul Krupp constitute a community treasure. Collecting and publishing them will provide a wonderful addition to the historical record of Fostoria."
-James E. Bailey, Mayor, 1996-99
"Paul H. Krupp's Fostoria, Ohio book is a great historic account of a great city. By compiling historical articles that appreared for over twelve years in the local newspaper, this book captures the essence of the wonderful way of life in Fostoria, Ohio. It is a must read for every Fostorian as well as all Americans."

The arrival of the Lake Shore Electric Railway turned the scattered rural township into a summertime resort destination, thus igniting a real estate boom. By World War II , the LSE was no more, but plentiful, affordable, and
locally produced electricity and water made Avon Lake a good place to make a living and a desirable place to reside. Fruehauf and B.F. Goodrich arrived and stayed, followed by more industry, commerce, suburban settlers, and commuters. Avon Lake became a city in 1960, and today 24,000 residents call it home.

Cleveland was one of the largest cities in America when Playhouse Square opened as a testament to the city's splendor. In 1921, Loew's State, Loew's Ohio, the Hanna Theatre and the Allen opened their doors, and Keith's Palace Theater, then the world's finest theater, greeted patrons in 1922. For fifty years these theaters prospered before falling on hard times. Three even faced demolition. But through visionary planning, hard work and civic pride these magnificent show palaces survived and thrive today, and Playhouse Square Center is once again the largest theater center outside of New York's Lincoln Center.
Playhouse Square volunteer Redcoat and tour guide Michael R. Routa celebrates the people who made and saved theater in Cleveland.

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%With historic images, John S. Fine and Frederic J. Krome document the growth, development, and history of Cincinnati's Jewish community.
Cincinnati, also known as the Queen City of the West, was first settled in 1788. The first permanent Jewish residents arrived sometime around the year 1817, when Joseph Jonas established himself in business as a watchmaker and silversmith. The first congregation, K. K. Bene Israel, was formally organized and incorporated in 1824 and is now the oldest synagogue west of the Alleghenies. The Jewish community occupies an important place in the history of Cincinnati, where Jewish businessmen were among the most important leaders in establishing the city as a major manufacturing center of ready-made clothing and as the hub of an extensive trading network throughout the western and southern United States and adjacent territories in the period leading up to the Civil War. Cincinnati Jewry also played an important role in the development of American Reform Judaism.

First settled in 1795, Hyde Park was an area of great estates and small and large farms until 1892. Designed to be upscale, the neighborhood attracted people looking for a suburban experience in an urban setting. That's when the seven-member Hyde Park Syndicate capitalized on new transportation connections to downtown as a means to sell their property as smaller parcels. This history introduces influential figures, including eventual Ohio governor Myers Y. Cooper, the Kilgour brothers, Levi Ault and Senator Joseph Foraker. It explains the development of Hyde Park Square and the community's streets, schools and churches. Readers will rediscover lost places, like the Grandin Bridge, Rookwood, the Pines, Belcamp and the Hermitage.

Baldwin Institute and University (1846) and German Wallace College (1863) created an academic atmosphere, and Berea's citizens became an eclectic and resilient mix of academics, business people, and immigrants. Eventually, quarrying ended, and the downtown business district, the Triangle, was nearly destroyed by fire three times. Each time the determined residents of Berea rebuilt. Today, Berea is a unique Cleveland suburb. Baldwin University and German Wallace College merged, and the south side of town has been devoted to recreation by the Cleveland Metroparks System and the City of Berea. The largest quarry became Coe Lake, a site for fishing, canoeing, art fairs, concerts, and ice-skating. Coffee shops, boutiques, and art galleries now thrive in old livery stables, icehouses, and hardware stores. Many of the grand homes of the 19th century still stand, proudly boasting their bronze "Century Home" plaques.
