Fairview Park is truly a postwar community. Before World War II, it was mainly rural countryside just beginning to see some development. The Rocky River valley had been enough of a barrier to keep Fairview that much more rural until high-level bridges were built in the 1920s. A brochure at the time for the newly developed Coffinberry Estates in northeast Fairview Park refers to "quick access to downtown Cleveland via Hilliard Road, Detroit Avenue, or Lorain Avenue bridges." In 1807, Christian Deardorff and Jesse Slingluff set out for the Ohio frontier. Before leaving, the men laid out the plat of a village that would sit at the banks of the Tuscarawas River. Over the next 10 years as Deardorff toiled away in his bachelor cabin, he held on to the dream of building his vision. The original plat map the two men devised contained 256 lots with land set aside for churches, schools, and a spacious downtown square. Today, over 200 years after Slingluff and Deardorff filed their plat at Zanesville, Dover continues to reflect their vision of a pleasant little town situated on the Tuscarawas River.

On September 13, 1876, the bell on Atwood Hall rang, students assembled, and Rio Grande College began its 140-year search for identity and its struggle for existence. Ira Haning, a Freewill Baptist minister, conveyed the idea of a college to a prominent couple, Nehemiah and Permelia Atwood. Nehemiah passed away in 1869, and supposedly, his last words were "Permelia, build the college." Permelia deeded 10 acres and financed Atwood Hall and the Boarding Hall, and Rio Grande College became a reality. Upon Permelia's death in 1885, Rio Grande faced the first of many financial pitfalls. Her estate was willed to the college, but the heirs of her second husband contested it in an action that would be resolved by the Ohio Supreme Court in 1896. As a college, junior college, community college, and currently, as a university, Rio Grande continues to seek a definitive identity.

In 1805, Aaron Olmstead purchased land in Connecticut's Western Reserve and named the township after his son Franklin. The Cuyahoga River ran through the plot of land, attracting many settlers. They built homes and businesses, including mills, which eventually inspired the village's name, Franklin Mills. Citizen Marvin Kent enticed the railroad shops to the village, and the population boomed. Prosperity followed, and in 1867, the name of the village was changed to Kent in his honor. In the 20th century, new businesses arrived, such as the Davey Tree Expert Company and the Twin Coach Company. Soon after, the bustling young city became the site of a normal school. In 1929, the school was renamed Kent State College, and by 1935, it gained university status. Today, Kent, the "Original Tree City," continues to serve as an educational and arts center.

Adams County was established on July 10, 1797. Carved out of the Old Northwest, it is the third-oldest county in Ohio, predating the state by more than five years. Quarrying was a major industry from roughly 1850 to 1950 in
Berea, attracting large numbers of immigrants in search of work.
Baldwin Institute and University (1846) and German Wallace College (1863) created an academic atmosphere, and Berea's citizens became an eclectic and resilient mix of academics, business people, and immigrants. Eventually, quarrying ended, and the downtown business district, the Triangle, was nearly destroyed by fire three times. Each time the determined residents of Berea rebuilt. Today, Berea is a unique Cleveland suburb. Baldwin University and German Wallace College merged, and the south side of town has been devoted to recreation by the Cleveland Metroparks System and the City of Berea. The largest quarry became Coe Lake, a site for fishing, canoeing, art fairs, concerts, and ice-skating. Coffee shops, boutiques, and art galleries now thrive in old livery stables, icehouses, and hardware stores. Many of the grand homes of the 19th century still stand, proudly boasting their bronze "Century Home" plaques.
