The Society of the Living Dead

That is what the managers of Radium Dial in Ottawa, Illinois, told the young women who painted radium on the faces of clock dials in the 1920s and 1930s. Instead, their teeth fell out and their jaws and bones disintegrated. Instead of putting pink in their cheeks, it put the women in their graves.
The company knew the hazards of working with radium, but they took no safety precautions. They lied to the workers and they denied compensation to the victims. To avoid financial liability, Radium Dial closed its doors and reopened a few blocks away as Luminous Processes and continued its deadly work for another forty years. Radium Dial cared more about the health and profitability of its company than they cared about the health of the women who made the company profitable.
There really was a "Society of the Living Dead," formed by the women who were dying from radium poisoning. Their astounding true story is told here.

New Orleans Coffee
9781467141390
Regular price $21.99 Sale price $15.39 Save 30%New Orleans history is steeped in coffee. Café du Monde and Morning Call started serving café au lait more than a century ago.
Outside the Cathedral of St. Louis in Jackson Square, early entrepreneurs like Old Rose provided eager churchgoers with the brew, and it was sold in the French Market beginning in the late 1700s. People gathered for business, socializing, politics and auctions at five hundred coffee exchanges and shops in the 1800s. Since 1978, myriad specialty coffee shops have opened to meet increasing demand for great coffee. Author Suzanne Stone presents the full story of this celebrated tradition, including how chicory became part of the city's special flavor.
Decatur

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%Established in 1820 on the banks of the Tennessee River, Decatur, Alabama, has always had its destiny tied to the water. It is the city's lifeblood and obstacle.
A railroad, an "iron river" between Tuscumbia and Decatur, was built to overcome the natural obstacle so it could be used as an asset. This effort worked. War, pestilence, economic downturns, labor, and social unrest all imbued residents with a resilience of spirit. Residents knew it, and visitors sometimes described it in quick notes on cardstock. These postcards from Decatur, Alabama, traveled across the land and the world. Presented here for the first time are some of those cards, dating between 1874 and the latter 1970s.

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%Abandoned Louisiana: Under a Bayou Moon is a photographic journey through the Bayou State by the light of the silvery moon. Some of these places are so hidden that, unless you are a local, you have no idea they even exist. Others are in plain sight, but are probably considered to be eyesores. These sites can take on an other-worldly appearance when photographed at night, with the addition of a little creative lighting.
If you have an interest in the history of Louisiana, this unique view of over 200 years of history is for you. Some of these places have disappeared due to neglect or the never-ending desire of man to bulldoze and replace with newer, bigger, and better. Others are still around, perhaps hidden behind overgrowth or on empty country roads. Regardless, this book will provide readers with a rarely-seen glimpse into Louisiana's culture.
Abandoned South Mississippi
9781634992657
Regular price $23.99 Sale price $16.79 Save 30%Abandoned South Mississippi uncovers the mystery of the wide variety of abandoned locations explored by author and photographer, Jay Farrell. Readers will enjoy being a fly on the wall during a multi-day excursion to South Mississippi's towns and rural backroads, far away from roaming tourists. The distress and skeletal remains of the antebellum homes, country general stores, churches, industrial buildings, and more are photographed and researched in an effort to tell their forgotten stories.
Photographs and narratives take readers along for the ride, bringing them back to a different place and time, safe from the risks found within the haunting, dilapidated buildings. Southern hospitality, home cooking, beautiful meadows, cotton fields, quaint small towns, and the beautiful Gulf Coast are all common associations with South Mississippi--this inside look explores the darker elements of the region that the average passerby would not dare examine.

Whether that involves a cool new start-up, a prominent place in the local, internationally respected wine industry, or seeking inspiration for an amazing new book, all kinds of diverse characters come here to dream and innovate.
If there is one thing this cross-section of humanity who flocked to the state had in common, it is the will to forge ahead into the unknown. Inventors, military men, gold prospectors, entrepreneurs--they all, in their own ways, took their risks and chances in this newer part of the USA, to create a life, a business, a work of art or science that had never been done before. This is the legacy that has formed Northern California today."
