Lambertville and New Hope

Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%The twin river hamlets of Lambertville, New Jersey, and New Hope, Pennsylvania, hold a special place in America's history.
The tiny pocket of land on which they sit borders the Delaware River on the east and west, and it is this famous waterway that has fostered life as far back as the days when the Lenni Lenape fished and hunted here. Much has changed since the land was purchased by representatives of King Charles II in the late seventeenth century, but what continues to make Lambertville and New Hope special are their deep and enduring ties to the past. This intriguing visual history documents the proud heritage of these riverfront communities from the dawn of photography to the early 1900s through two hundred carefully selected images accompanied by detailed and informative text. Photography is perhaps the most remarkable of all our historic records because it brings history to life for so many people. The images collected for this book provide a window into the past that is both intimate and learned. One image tells of the human toil and ingenuity that went into the digging of the canal system, while another takes us into the carefree world of two young lovers setting out with parasol and oars to spend some quiet moments together on the Delaware in the Victorian era.
The 1788 Morristown Ghost Hoax

Regular price $21.99 Sale price $15.39 Save 30%A Fabulous Fable of the Supernatural Kind
The saga of the Morristown ghost has been told around campfires and dinner tables in Morris County for generations. Local legend claimed British Loyalists secretly buried stolen Patriot treasure on Schooley Mountain as they fled the oncoming forces of George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Years later in 1788, a former school teacher from Connecticut, Ransford Rodgers, convinced local prominent Morristown families that a ghost was protecting the true location of the treasure and he alone could exercise it. Little did the victims know, Rodgers was perpetuating an elaborate hoax and eventually extorted large sums of money from the embarrassed local elite. The tale has been recounted in various sensational pamphlets and publications ever since, leaving behind a mystery of what is true or myth.
Author Peter Zablocki separates fact from fiction in the story of the great Morristown ghost hoax.

New Year's Day 1900 heralded the beginning of Newark's Golden Age-the heyday of the city's diverse population, beautiful mansions, varied industries, and prosperous insurance, leather, and jewelry companies. Newark's crystal-clear water attracted some thirty-five breweries, including P. Ballantine & Sons and Hensler's. Frederick Law Olmsted developed Branch Brook Park, the first county park in the United States. Transportation for industrial and personal use was booming, with barges, ships, trains, and trolleys running continually. Called ""the City of Churches,"" Newark became known for the numerous houses of worship used by its residents. Educational institutions grew, paving the way for the many schools and colleges in existence today. Newark: The Golden Age explores New Jersey's largest city through rare vintage postcard views that will captivate residents and visitors alike.

Thousands of people came out to support Franklin D. Roosevelt when he visited the state in 1936 and proved their support at the polls four consecutive times. After voting Republican for most of the two decades following L.B.J., New Jersey once again became the battle state in 1992 when H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton made it their prerogative to win the state. Before Donald Trump took week-long working vacations from his Golf Club at Bedminster, other Commanders in Chief sought out the benefits of resting at the Jersey shore. Cape May's Congress Hall Hotel served as a "Summer White House" for Benjamin Harrison Richard Nixon spent the last thirteen years of his life as part of the Saddle River community.
Author Peter Zablocki presents the heated elections, political events and key moments of the President in the Garden State.

The History of Diners in New Jersey
9781609498221
Regular price $23.99 Sale price $16.79 Save 30%Although the industry is all but gone today, New Jersey was once the hub of diner manufacturing, making mobile eateries that fed hungry Americans all over.
The silver Airstreams and neon signs of the classic American diner brighten New Jersey's highways and Main Streets but the intrinsic role they have played in the state's culture and industry for more than one hundred years is much more than eggs-over-easy and coffee. Diners are the state's ultimate gathering places--at any moment, high school students, CEOs, construction workers and tourists might be found at a counter chatting with the waitresses and line cooks. Locals yearn for lost favorites like the Excellent Diner and Prout's Diner and still gather at beloved haunts like the Bendix and Tick Tock Diners. Author Michael C. Gabriele offers this delicious history--collected from interviews with owners, patrons and experts--and indulges in many fond memories of classic New Jersey eateries.

A History of Inventing in New Jersey
9781626192065

In addition to the first cultivated blueberry, tasty treats like ice cream cones and M&Ms are also Jersey natives. Iconic aspects of American life, like the batting cage, catcher's mask and even professional baseball itself, started in New Jersey. Life would be a lot harder without the vacuum cleaner, plastic and Band-Aids, and many important advances in medicine and surgery were also developed here. Join author Linda Barth as she explores groundbreaking, useful, fun and even silly inventions and their New Jersey roots.
The Millstone Valley Through Time

Regular price $22.99 Sale price $16.09 Save 30%The valley's streets and roads of today follow the trails once used by the Lenape Indians who peacefully ceded their claims to the land as the Dutch and English settlers arrived.
The new settlers were eager to clear this fertile land for their farms and villages. These roads also follow the same routes used by General George Washington as he led his weary, freezing soldiers to Morristown after the crossing of the Delaware and the victory at the Battle of Princeton during the American Revolution.
The Millstone Valley Scenic Byway, which is a central feature of the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area, makes history come alive through a charming glimpse of the rural past surviving in the heart of America's most densely populated state.
