Douglas Deuchler our own local treasure has another
book on the market. His second book with the
Arcadia label is on the town of Maywood. A town
which has changed a great deal in the past 100 years
or so of its history. Mr. Deuchler has done a wonderful
job of using some great history, treasured photos, and
good writing to put some soul into the past of this
interesting town. Douglas Deuchler had worked in
the town of Maywood for decades, at the High school
on First avenue and Madison.
I thought that I had a good feel for Maywood, but
after reading the book, a whole new vision is now
in my memory. Maywood was a fancy European
based community in its start and has now turned
into a mostly Black African-American town. A
town where many whites in the suburbs would
drive through fifty years ago and see how well the
local residents of color were doing in their own
I am looking forward with anticipation to getting his
next book on Berwyn, also printed by Aradia press
and written by a good writer and avid historian.
