Ossipee Valley Historical Societies Sign Book Deal By Vera Matthews - 05/06/2005 KeepMEcurrent.com
If all goes according to schedule, by Christmas residents of this area may be able to buy a book of historical photos with captions from five towns located in the Ossipee Valley.
On April 28, the president of each town’s historical society signed a book contract, with Arcadia Publishing of Portsmouth N.H., at the Limerick Library.
The presidents involved are Gary Mason of Cornish, Candice Gooch of Limerick, Ann Dunbar of Limington, Denise Carpenter of Newfield and Sylvia Wilson of Parsonsfield-Porter.
Gail Libby, vice president of the Limerick Historical Society, is coordinating the book project. The choice of towns, she said, "Hinged on a deed from an American Indian sometimes referred to as Captain Sandy.”
"This fulfills part of our mission as historical societies. Its a way to share and showcase our collections," Libby added.
The book of pictures is part of a nationwide series known as “Images of America” and each society is responsible for 24 pages of photos. A village layout for each town will also be included in the book.
Libby initiated contact with Arcadia Publishing last year and Gooch, president of the Limerick Historical Society, "got the ball rolling” Libby said the publishing company’s archivist, Adele Floyd, "has been helping me a lot with this", said Libby.
In order for the books to be available for sale during the 2005 Christmas season all materials need to be delivered to Libby by June 15 and then to Arcadia Publishing by July 1.
The books themselves will be printed by a company in Great Britain and will be available for sale through all of the participating historical societies, on the Internet and in local bookstores. The cost will be $19.99.
