If you're a history buff, you might want to attend a special lecture on "Nevada County in the golden 1850s" at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Sierra College Nevada County campus.
Maria Brower (pictured above), a local historian and author, will make the presentation using anecdotes and historic images in Room L101 of the Learning Resource Center.
The lecture, which is being sponsored by the Sierra College Friends of the Library, is open to the public and a donation of $5 is suggested. Students may come for free.
A Nevada County resident of 28 years, Brower is the author of two books, "Nevada City" and "Gold Rush Towns of Nevada County," published by Arcadia Publishing.
Before retiring in 2006, Brower was the manager of the Doris Foley Library for Historical Research in Nevada City. She was awarded the "Citizen of the Year Award" in 2006 by the Nevada County Historical Society. Brower also founded the Nevada County Genealogical Society in 1989.
