Birthday book for Weehawken By Jennifer Kim - 02/05/2009 Jersey Journal
The township kicked off a yearlong celebration of its 150th anniversary yesterday - and in a fitting gesture, a pair of authors presented the township with a birthday present.
Lauren Sherman and Ellen Robb Gaulkin co-authors of "Weehawken - Images of America," gave a copy to Mayor Richard Turner yesterday at the ceremony at the Weehawken Public Library.
Gaulkin said it was a grueling task compiling photos and documents of 150 years of Weehawken's history, but added: "It was so much fun, though. We learned more about the township that we didn't know about before.
"People will take a step back into time, and I think they'll really enjoy it."
Turner said the township has worked hard to preserve its small-town identity.
"We've been restoring the public facilities of Weehawken over the years, but we've still preserved that small-town character in an urban atmosphere," he said.
Longtime Councilman Robert Sosa has witnessed gradual changes over the years.
"There's never been a template for this town," Sosa said. "There's always been some kind of diversification in this small community. That's why it's been so great to document the town's history with pictures, documents and memorabilia in a book."
Weehawken will celebrate its 150th anniversary with events throughout the year. The first will be on March 15, the official date of the town's founding, when there will be a re-enactment of the first town meeting.
