Local Author Publishes Book about Historic Monroe
By Randy Lewis   - 02/26/2009

Main Street Monroe

On March 8th from 2 till 4 p.m. the Monroe Historical Society will host a book signing at its facility at 10 East Elm St. for local resident and author Marcia McCartt. The newly published book titled “Monroe” takes the reader back in time and lets us see what life was like in Monroe some 200 years ago. McCratt’s 128 page book is part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series.

Marcia McCartt is a historian and genealogist. She currently lives in Monroe and is a former trustee for the Christian Waldschmidt Homestead and former chair of the advisory board to Camp Dennison Civil War Museum. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in creative writing from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her love for genealogy and the city of Monroe is what inspired her to write her first book.

Monroe was platted in 1817 by John H. Piatt and Nathanial Sackett. John H. Piatt was a merchant of Cincinnati and during the War of 1812 he was the largest army contractor in the west.

Along with the book signing the historical society will feature several photos, an array of clothing, some small tools and a Paragon Plow that was manufactured in the community. The Paragon Plow Works was owned by Charles Warner. The business was started in 1859, and some years later he invented the Paragon Plow. It was the only ploy of the type in the country.

McCratt’s book can be purchased for $21.99 at area book stores or from Arcadia Publishing’s Images.
