New from Arcadia Publishing is Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, by local author and educator Benjamin C. Ridgeway. Boasting more than 200 images, Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church offers a fascinating look at this beacon of racial pride and social consciousness.
Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta was founded in 1886. The name Ebenezer means “rock or stone of help.” From a small group of believers in a boxlike structure on Airline Alley, Ebenezer has grown to an internationally known church with over 4,000 members. The love and cooperation between the members and the pastor have created a family atmosphere that has sustained the growth and expansion of the church.
The author hopes this book “will give its readers a glimpse of the environment that formed the foundation of the social consciousness which Martin Luther King Jr. brought to the civil rights movement. Ebenezer Baptist Church promoted the act of worship as more than just a Sunday morning activity. At Ebenezer, true worship is demonstrated through active service to mankind and the community.”
Highlights of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church:
• Martin Luther King Jr. was known to the world as a civil rights leader, but to the members of Ebenezer from 1960-1968, he was the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church
• From its early years, the development of leadership skills of the youth has been an integral part of program of the church
• Ebenezer Baptist Church has been a leader in raising the social consciousness of the city of Atlanta, the state of Georgia, the nation and the world
A majority of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the Ebenezer Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
