Job Opportunities

Acquisitions Editors
Arcadia Publishing, the nation's leading publisher of local and regional history, seeks two Acquisitions Editors for its Western publishing team. The successful candidates will work in the San Francisco Bay area or the Austin, Texas area. The Austin-based editor will work from home and will also have the exciting opportunity of developing and working in a future branch office in Austin. The San Francisco-based editor will work out of our San Francisco office. The position is full time, salaried, and offers medical/dental benefits, and a 401k. Occasional travel as necessary.

Job responsibilities will include the following:
  • seeking out prospective authors
  • developing and maintaining professional relationships with relevant individuals within the field
  • Acquiring and evaluating new titles in assigned territory.
  • negotiating contracts with potential authors and agents
  • working closely with authors providing feedback on materials, and ensuring that contracted deadlines are met and book materials meet Arcadia standards
  • maintain computerized records and tracking systems for all titles and contacts within assigned territory
  • acting as author’s advocate and contact for the rest of the publishing house
Qualified candidates should have the following:
  • extensive and demonstrable knowledge of Texas history and geography (Austin position)
  • extensive and demonstrable knowledge of Pacific Northwest history, particularly Oregon and Washington (San Francisco position)
  • outgoing, easy manner, excellent phone skills and the ability to start conversations easily
  • detail oriented able to manage several projects at once while assisting authors in meeting deadlines
  • history, English, or related degree preferred
  • high level of comfort with computer tasks/programs such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, and internet research
  • familiarity with scanning software very desirable

IT Specialist
Provide first level support for network and users and installed applications. Prepare and maintain system operations and compliance documentation, manage printers, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair computers, peripherals and business machines and coordinate equipment maintenance and repair with outside service providers. Maintain the security and integrity of computer room, assist in operation and maintenance of computer backups, set up and Installation of desktop computer hardware and software.

The ideal candidate will have minimum 2-yr degree in Computer Science or related field, Bachelors degree preferred and 3-5 years prior work experience in a related position, or a combination of advanced technical training and/or work experience.

Applied knowledge of Windows desktop versions: 2000, XP Pro, Vista, and Windows Server versions 2000/2003, Microsoft Office 2003 product suite including Outlook 2003 and LAN/WAN networking principles and techniques are required.

Knowledge of the following will be preferred, but not required: Apple Macintosh, Linux/Unix, MS Exchange 2003/2007, MS SQL Server, 2000/2005 and Cisco VPN Client.
