Nags Head boasts a plethora of natural wonders. From an ecologically unique maritime forest to breathtaking coastal dunes, the dynamics of the area corroborate the sentiment Thomas Nixon expressed in his 1964 classic. In this striking photographic collection, Downing illustrates why this scenic spot on the Outer Banks has been beloved for generations by sun-seekers, sightseers and surfers alike.

The South Fork remained relatively rural until the railroad arrived in the 1870s. In this pictorial history, Richard Panchyk surveys how dramatically the landscape has changed, from the famous Montauk Lighthouse and iconic windmills to the sprawling mansions and opulent hotels, and highlights some of the notable figures who graced these shores, including New York politicians and a plethora of artists and celebrities. Showcasing the South Fork's famous faces and places, Panchyk reveals this coastal community's bygone era.

Life for children who grew up in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire's countryside during the 1940s was simple and less complicated than the hustle and bustle of later decades. The towns of Peterborough, Dublin, Jaffrey and Hancock composed part of this picturesque landscape, which still attracts leaf peepers every autumn. Jonathan Turner

A Brief History of Bucktown

9781626199095

$21.99

German immigrants created leafy beer gardens here nearly two centuries ago, establishing Bucktown as the heart of entertainment in downtown Davenport for generations. In 1916, the founding of the Tri-City Symphony Orchestra at the Burtis Opera House embodied the neighborhood's reputation for high culture. The numerous saloons and theaters, as well as the forty-two documented brothels that flourished within two blocks, lent a bawdy side to the good times. Varied industries thrived through World War II, and downtown bustled with shoppers visiting department stores like Petersen's. Later, the neighborhood struggled and declined as a farming crisis hit the region hard. With revitalized landmarks like the magnificent Hotel Blackhawk and the historic Redstone Building, the community is growing more vibrant as a place to live, work and play. Author Jonathan Turner explores this dynamic history and transformation.

A Brief History of Easley

9781467119337

$21.99

Easley has a rare combination of a quaint Main Street and a thriving industrial presence. The city was a series of small farms and open land until residents convinced officials to make the area a stop along the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railroad after the Civil War. Access to the railroad and the popularity of cotton spurred an era of rapid growth and expansion, culminating in the dominance of the textile industry throughout most of the twentieth century. While cotton drove textiles in the area, advances in agriculture and manufacturing brought dozens of companies, placing Easley at the center of the state's biggest industrial area. Author Chad Stewart details the history of a city that moved from sleepy train stop to vibrant South Carolina city.

A Brief History of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania

9781596291270

$21.99

Revolutionary War historians know Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, as the site where George Washington successfully repelled the British before moving on to Valley Forge. The Fort Washington of that day featured a landscape dominated by farmland, but the beauty of the area and its proximity to burgeoning Philadelphia ensured that it would not remain rural for long. Less than a hundred years after the crack of Patriot muskets reverberated through Fort Washington, the area grew into a thriving summer resort, and was well on its way to becoming an early Philadelphia suburb. As a playground for elite Philadelphians before the end of the nineteenth century, Fort Washington became the location for lavish summer homes and year-round estates. The popularity of the area continued to increase, and soon a thriving middle class developed, changing the face of Fort Washington and producing dozens of grand Victorian homes that survive to this day. A Brief History of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania: From Farmland to Suburb, by local historians Lewis and Trudy Keen tells the story of Fort Washington that few know. Drawing on a wealth of original documents, this look at Fort Washington's colorful past provides an accessible account of the people, events, homes and businesses that have made this area of Pennsylvania a prosperous and vibrant community.

A Brief History of Old Newbury

9781596294813

$21.99

In the first ten years of its settlement, the town of Newbury
witnessed murders, kidnappings, earthquakes and a plague of caterpillars. The century that followed--marked by religious conflict, Indian uprisings and public scandal--
proved no less challenging to the early Puritan community.
In 1640, Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop noted, "As
people increased, so sin abounded." But through the turmoil, Newbury's citizens harnessed the region's abundant natural resources and developed a thriving community. Author Bethany Groff introduces the compelling personalities that shaped the history of Old Newbury up until 1764, when Newburyport received its independence from the mother town. From the scandalous exploits of Dr. Henry Greenland to the courageous and sacrificing acts of founding families like the Emerys, Dummers and Pikes, A Brief History of Old Newbury provides a captivating glimpse into the verve of this
early New England town.

A Brief History of Orange, California

Orange, California, a city that started small, but grew big on the promise, sweat and toil of agriculture. Born from the breakup of the old Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, its early days were filled with horse races, gambling, and fiestas. Citrus was the backbone of the economy for more than half a century, though post-war development eventually replaced the orange groves. Historian, and Orange native, Phil Brigandi traces the roots of the city back to its small town origins: the steam whistle of the Peanut Roaster, the citrus packers tissue-wrapping oranges for transport, Miss Orange leading the May Festival parade, and the students of Orange Union High painting the O and celebrating Dutch-Irish Days. In doing so, he captures what makes Orange distinct.

A Brief History of South Denver & University Park

9781609492335

$21.99

University Park was founded in the 1880s when the University of Denver (Colorado Seminary) moved from downtown Denver to land donated by potato farmer Rufus Clark. The University, founded by Methodists, wanted to escape the urban blight of the city and build an oasis for education. Liquor production or consumption was not allowed, and though today the area has many pubs a number of home mortgages to this day contain old covenants forbidding the making or selling of spirits. Around University Park grew the town of South Denver, which was annexed to the city of Denver in the early twentieth century. For many years in the late 1800s the primary employer was the University of Denver, but over time others moved into the area for its attractive homes and well respected schools. The area has traditionally been upper middle class and has enjoyed one of the lowest crime rates in the city. At the geographic center of University Park is Observatory Park, named for the famous Chamberlain Observatory, built in the 1890s and still fully operational with popular public viewing nights. In the early part of the century Colorado Governor Henry Buchtel lived in the park, as did a number of famed early DU faculty such as Ammi Hyde, who beat the freshman boys in an annual foot race well into his 90's. The area boomed after World War II as many from other parts of the country who were stationed in Colorado chose to remain and make it their home. The area has remained prosperous and continues to grow, sharing in the overall success that the Denver metro area has experienced.

Swinging axes soon made way for the burgeoning split-level town, with stately Main Street homes on St. Johnsbury Plain presiding in grandeur over the bustling commerce of Railroad Street below. Peggy Pearl brings a decidedly human element to this comprehensive history, wandering the graves of Mount Pleasant Cemetery and bringing to life the stories of those tanners, cobblers, millworkers and brick makers who made St. Johnsbury their home. With excerpts from vintage newspapers like the Caledonian-Record and the Farmer's Herald, Pearl unfolds the transformation from quiet mill town into picturesque manufacturing hub of Caledonia County.

A Guide to Historic Gainesville

9781596292178

$21.99

Your guide to the people, places and events that made Gainesville the thriving city and educational center it is today. Gainesville, Florida, was established in the early 1850s in an area of Alachua County known for cotton farming, cattle and citrus. It soon became known for education, with many fine private schools. Sarah, as mistress of one of North Carolina's largest plantations—The Grove—offers the reader a nineteenth-century perspective on slavery, education and the impact of religion on the lives of Southern women. Begun in the wake of the religious revival that swept the South in the mid-nineteenth century, this journal serves as a candid perspective into life in the changing village of Charlotte, capturing the effects of the newly constructed U.S. Mint and the Carolina gold mining rush on this small community. Editors Dyer, McConnell and Williams, along with a team of Rosedale historians, meticulously transcribed the original hand-written journal to be presented here in its entirety. A View of Boston Common

9780738594903

$21.99

Boston Common belongs to the world. In or around it took place events which link it with the history of government for and by the people in this country. From it radiated the influences that led to democratic as opposed to aristocratic rule. To it can be traced the gatherings in town halls by the substantial men in Massachusetts, and other commonwealths; and the famous little red schoolhouses date their inspiration from the public exercises that took place on the classic green in Boston. Boston, the American Athens, stands in the front rank of social, commercial and political prominence. The reputation of families of culture has spread throughout the country, and its leading men, as one generation has followed another, have wielded a mighty influence in moulding public opinion and promoting its resources. It abounds in historic landmarks, which date from Colonial days, and its modern development, with its broad avenues, buildings and parks, has equalled, if not excelled, any city in the world. The Common, with all its historic associations, is now the Park of the City with its fountains, statues, malls and lake. It has always been the scene of all kinds of incidents—historic, dramatic, tragic, and is now the feature in its landscape and beauty. It might be called an indicator of all that ever occurred in Boston.

Aberdeen was settled by Scottish immigrants who moved up the Cape Fear River from the North Carolina coast. Before the railroad, the region consisted of small farms and a single church. The arrival of the Raleigh & Augusta Railroad in the mid-1870s was the first major impetus for growth in and around Aberdeen. Soon thereafter, the lumber industry expanded and naval stores were established. This advancement contributed to the growth and success of Aberdeen as a major rail and commercial center. In the 20th century, this growing community underwent development and became a popular shopping destination featuring a vibrant and historic downtown commercial district. Aberdeen Lake provides recreational and social activities and is an integral part of the public parks system. Aberdeen shares the remarkable history of a community that has grown and prospered in the North Carolina Sandhills.

The Industrial Revolution, along with free land, created fierce competition among American railroad companies to connect the country with a web of track. Goods, as well as people, needed to be transported. The railroads would create towns, then profit from the sale of the land and transporting of people and goods. The plan worked brilliantly, as there were no other means of transportation—or roads—to these new communities. Aberdeen, platted in 1881, was known as an end of line stop for several years. During this time, the town boomed into a city. Main Street sprawled southward, and wooden boomtown businesses were quickly replaced with elaborate brick buildings, some six stories tall. Examples of Aberdeen's eclectic style of architecture, spanning nearly 60 years, can be found within Images of America: Aberdeen. Many of these treasures still exist today; others, along with their lost stories, are forever preserved here.

Abilene

$24.99

The first settler to make permanent residence in the Abilene area arrived in 1856. From the humble beginnings of a prairie dugout, Abilene grew to be the first cowtown of the West. Joseph G. McCoy set up his stockyards in Abilene, and millions of cattle were driven up from Texas via the Chisholm Trail and shipped out on Union Pacific railcars. Abilene exploded into one of the wildest towns in the West. Several sheriffs tried to tame it, including Wild Bill Hickok, but gentrification came in the form of bankers and businessmen. During World War II, hometown hero Dwight D. Eisenhower led the Allies to victory and eventually became the 34th president of the United States. Today, Abilene plays host to thousands of visitors from around the world and celebrates its rich western heritage with the Chisholm Trail Day festival.

According to legend, in about 1760, Daniel Boone first named this hinterlands settlement Wolf Hills. Incorporated in 1778, the town of Abingdon became the leading trade, business, and legal center for Southwest Virginia from the late 1700s to mid-1800s. With a key location along the Great Wagon Road, the community blossomed during the 19th and 20th centuries due to trade, railroad commerce, banking, industry, and its natural resources, such as timber and salt from nearby Saltville. However, from the 1960s to 1980s, downtown lost several historic landmarks to fire and demolition. Businesses began to move to outlying shopping centers, and small, locally owned businesses were replaced by national chain stores. Railroad traffic decreased and no longer moved goods and passengers. Previously the locus for commerce, transportation, and entertainment, the historic downtown area transitioned to an arts and tourist destination and to a unique crossroads service area with government centers, restaurants, speciality stores, offices, banks, and hotels.

Accokeek is an unincorporated place in the southwest corner of Prince George's County. The name Accokeek is an Algonquian word meaning at the edge of the hill. Before the arrival of Capt. John Smith in 1623, indigenous people had occupied the area intermittently for thousands of years. After an initial increase in the European population and a corresponding decline in the number of American Indians, the population of Accokeek stabilized. The area could be described as a rural community in harmony with nature. Since World War II, the size and diversity of the population have changed rapidly. In 1942, Indian Head Naval Reservation Access Road was constructed. The major highway passes through Accokeek and connects residents to federal government jobs in Indian Head to the south and Washington, DC, to the north. Today, Accokeek citizens continue efforts to preserve the natural environment and iconic historical landmarks from development.

It is the county seat of Pontotoc County and was called the worst town for criminal activity in the Indian Territory for the lack of justice. The west end block of Main Street was called the Bucket of Blood and harbored many murderers and outlaws until, in 1909, the hanging of four men in a stable advised all who would hide in Ada to leave or suffer the same fate. The murder of former U.S. marshal Gus Bobbitt was the catalyst for this desperate action. The hanging is one of the most talked about tales of the early West. Growing from the oil, cotton, and cement industries, Ada is known as the city of clear spring water. Adams County

Adams County was established on July 10, 1797. Carved out of the Old Northwest, it is the third-oldest county in Ohio, predating the state by more than five years. The county's southern boundary is the Ohio River, once a vital component in the commerce and growth of the county. When the first explorers and settlers came here, prehistoric earthworks dotted the landscape. The most significant, the Great Serpent Mound, is preserved today in a public park. In antebellum days, the county was a hotbed of abolitionist activities with several "stations" organized on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Confederate General John H. Morgan and his raiders passed through the county taking horses, food, and anything they liked. The vintage views in this book that help tell the story of the county come from the collections of the Adams County Historical Society, the Adams County Genealogical Society, and several private sources.

Adirondack People and Places

$24.99

New York's mountainous Adirondack region, once considered foreboding and impassable, has evolved during the last three centuries into a desirable place for people to live and visit. Native Americans, trappers, hunters, and anglers first arrived to tap the wilderness resources offered by the Adirondack Mountains. Lumbermen, miners, and tannery workers settled the back woodlands to harvest the logs, dig the minerals, and collect the hemlock bark. Others came to clear trees and farm the land, and settlements soon dotted the landscape. The travelling public found the healthy, pure air and the beautiful mountains with miles of waterways a welcomed alternative to the hot, smoky cities. The tourist industry grew and flourished with hotels, cabins, cottages, summer homes, and wealthy estates spreading throughout the six million acres of Adirondack Park. Communities also continued to thrive as visitors found the area impossible to leave. Adirondack People and Places celebrates this mountainous country where the wilderness truly became a place for people.

Adrian

Like many of the early settlers to the Michigan territory, enticed by the promise of cheap land, Addison Comstock purchased 640 acres along the Raisin River in 1825. Within that decade, the community had been laid out and had both a sawmill and gristmill. Sarah Comstock, Addison's wife, named the village Adrian. The newcomers to the region not only included Easterners, especially from New York and New England, but also increased immigration from the 1840s of Germans and the Irish. As Adrian was a center of the Underground Railroad in Michigan, there was also a notable African American community dating back to the 1830s. By glimpsing at these collected images from the Lenawee County Historical Society, the Siena Heights University Archives, and the private collection of the author of the first 100 years of impressive growth, one sees a community steeped in both progress and tradition.

Agawam and Feeding Hills

9780738504698

$24.99

Founded by William Pynchon in 1635, Agawam was among the earliest settlements along the Connecticut River. Located on an early Colonial road connecting Springfield with Connecticut, Agawam Center remained the hub of the town until the early 1900s. As trolleys and automobiles made travel easier, development spread west toward the village of Feeding Hills and set in motion the transformation from quiet farming community to bustling village center. Agawam and Feeding Hills captures Agawam's rich past through photographs and postcards from the 1880s to the 1950s. The book rediscovers lost Agawam landmarks, such as Randall Field and Bowles Airport, the Feeding Hills train station, the Agawam and Feeding Hills Town Halls, and the Porter Distillery, makers of nationally known Agawam Gin. It includes views by the well-known Howes brothers of Ashfield and of Agawam Center from the beginning of the twentieth century and chronicles a simpler and less hurried chapter of this town's history. The Agawam Historical Association operates the Agawam Historical & Fire House Museum from the 1918 Elm Street fire station in Agawam. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of Agawam and Feeding Hills will be used by the association for the maintenance of the museum.

Nestled amongst the Santa Monica Mountains, Agoura Hills is considered the western gateway to Los Angeles County. Originally inhabited by the Chumash Indians, the area was a well-known stagecoach stop for early settlers heading west thanks to its accessibility to well water. In 1927, Paramount Pictures purchased a ranch and started making movies; hence, the town became known as Picture City, having drawn the likes of silent film star Laura LaPlante (for whom a street was named), Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, and Claudette Colbert. The town was renamed by the Post Office to Agoura Hills after French settler Pierre Agoure. In 1982, the residents voted to officially incorporate the 7.9-square-mile region, making Agoura Hills Los Angeles County's 82nd city. Today, Agoura Hills is a flourishing, family-friendly community known for its award-winning schools, lush and beautiful parks, biking and hiking trails, and burgeoning businesses. The area has become one of the most desirable places to live in Los Angeles, yet the population remains relatively low at approximately 20,000 residents.

Alameda

9780738559537

$24.99

Through its many incarnations, Alameda has never lost its charm and ability to draw people from all walks of life. Originally a peninsula inhabited by Native Americans, it was purchased by Don Luis Peralta in 1818 and developed into a bedroom community of San Francisco. Alameda became an island in 1902, and a short time later, it was a new home to many refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The Neptune Beach amusement park attracted tourists who enjoyed the bathing, beaches, and rides, making Alameda the Coney Island of the West. Modern transportation carried people and cargo in and out on ferries, trains, ships, and planes, which landed at the busy Airdrome. The creation of the Naval Air Station in 1938 and World War II made Alameda a military town. The 1990s brought Alameda back to its first purpose, as a small town amongst big cities, its streets lined with graceful Victorians and with a diverse and lively population.
