Following the drilling of the world's first oil well in 1859 just south of town, the small village of Titusville exploded into a bustling city. Through the early 1870s, newly prosperous citizens built stores, banks, hotels, and churches, as well as hundreds of residences. Into the 20th century, residents remodeled or built anew, leaving Titusville with a crop of Victorian buildings, many of which still stand today. The nearby cities of Petroleum Center and Pithole developed at significant oil production sites. As production moved elsewhere in the 1870s, both cities were abandoned and soon vanished completely. Bristol, originally known as West Woods, formed later than other Colonial towns. Bristol's mother town of Farmington was settled in 1640 and became a town in 1645, but pioneers did not lay out the remote and unpopulated section of Farmington until 1721. The Jerome, Matthews, and Lewis families created the New Cambridge Parish in 1742, and it was this parish that separated from Farmington and finally formed the town of Bristol in 1785. In Bristol Historic Homes, readers will meet these families and other important figures, such as Ebenezer Barns. Barns built the first permanent home in 1728, and this structure later became a tavern and community center. Architecture shows the unique views of the town's style from its earliest days. Known as Unquety by the Neponset Tribe of Indians, Milton was founded
in 1640, and was incorporated in 1662. During the town's first century, the architecture was post-Medieval or First Period construction. Describing the town in 1839 for his Historical Collections of Every Town in Massachusetts, John Warner Barber said, "Milton is adorned with some pleasant country seats, and contains at the two falls [Lower Mills and Mattapan], and at the bridge where the Neponset
meets the tide, manufactories of cotton, paper. . ."
Today, Milton's architecture is represented by a wide spectrum of styles from the earliest houses in town, the Capen House (c. 1655) and the Tucker House
(c. 1670), to the Daniel Vose House (known today as the Suffolk Resolves House) and the Isaiah Rogers-designed Captain Robert Bennet Forbes House. Each of the architectural styles is the reflection of an architect's or a builder's idea of adaptations of period designs. When the Henry Belin Jr. Waverly Community House and Park was dedicated in 1920, Margaretta E. Belin intended both to honor her husband and benefit residents of Abington Township. The community house was envisioned by its progressive donor as the educational, cultural, and social heart of rural Waverly. By 1930, when Margaretta and Henry's six children added land and two wings to the original building in honor of their mother, chautauquas, concerts, clubs, sports teams, and Scout troops were filling the annual calendar of events. On site, a post office provided mail delivery, a canteen supplied merchandise from ammonia to pencils, and residents of Dalton, Factoryville, Clarks Summit, and Clarks Green pumped gasoline. No activity, however, was more celebrated both locally and regionally than the annual fair that united Waverly in purpose, labor, and pleasure at summer's end. Since its inception, the Waverly Community House has set and achieved ambitious goals to enrich community life, a mission that successive generations have strived to follow.
