Take a fascinating tour of the influential art deco movement and its manifestations in and around Detroit.

Since the 1920s, Art Deco, or "The Modern Style," has delighted people with its innovative use of materials and designs that capture the spirit of optimism to create the style of the future. Although the Detroit metro area is primarily known as an industrial region, it boasts some of the finest examples of Art Deco in the country.

Through a panorama of photographs,Art Deco in Detroit explores the wide-ranging variety of these architectural marvels, from world-famous structures like the Fisher and Penobscot Buildings, to commercial buildings, theaters, homes, and churches. The grandeur evident in some of the major buildings reflects a time when artisans and architects collaborated to craft structures that transcend functionality - they endure as standing works of art.

In 1822, Gov. Lewis Cass defined the boundaries of six counties, including Lenawee. The Pottawattamies inhabited Lenawee County before settlers, many of Quaker descent, migrated from eastern states, predominantly New York. Abundant forests, prairies, hills, lakes, and streams surrounded by uncultivated fruit, berries, nuts, and wild game had enabled the county to lead the state in agricultural and industrial wealth by 1900. This early success is also partially owed to the establishment of the Grange by George B. Horton in 1873. Lenawee led the state with 34 Granges and more than 3,500 members by the turn of the century. Adrian would become known as the fence capital of the world, while Tecumseh was referred to as the celery capital. Michigan's first cheese factories began in Fairfield Township in 1866, with Samuel Horton creating a new form of soft cheese. Recognition of the historical significance of this area is shown throughout the region today with landmarks that pay tribute to the pioneers.

Present-day Chaldeans are the descendants of the ancient people of Mesopotamia (Iraq)—the cradle of civilizations, the bedrock of the Old Testament prophets, and the land of the first Christians outside the ancient Roman Empire. Chaldeans are Catholic in faith, using the ancient Aramaic liturgical rite with the language that Jesus spoke during his earthly ministry. The Chaldean Church has a glorious history with countless martyrs and great missionary enterprises. By the start of the 20th century, Chaldeans increasingly began to flee Iraq in search of freedom and stability. Today, although several generations have been born and raised in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, and Australia, Iraq remains an important religious and cultural region. This book portrays important events during Chaldean history, with a focus on the migrant groups in the United States and Canada.
