Coastal South Carolina was among the first places in the New World to be settled. Among the plantations in the Charleston District, part of which was to become Berkeley County, were four overlapping the area that was later to be established as the city of Hanahan. Following the Civil War, as the plantations were broken up into many small farms and the city of Charleston expanded, a search began for a nearby, new source of fresh water to replace water from contaminated wells. That search led to Goose Creek, where, in 1903, a dam was built and a pumping station established, named Hanahan for the chairman of the Charleston Water Commission. Military installations and housing, thriving businesses, and schools began to meet the needs of the developing community. Hanahan would grow over the years and incorporate into a city in 1973, known for its beautiful landscape and community culture. Today, Hanahan is the heart of the Lowcountry in location and, most importantly, in spirit. Despite its growth, it maintains the original small-town feel, drawing and keeping people into this community that they love.

Southern Maryland is made up of a collection of peninsulas covered in low rolling hills, fields, forests, swamps, and waterways leading to the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. As such, this area enjoyed relative isolation and small population for over three centuries despite its proximity to cities such as Alexandria, Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington. Those who did settle here developed a close connection to its farms, waterways, and natural remoteness. Southern Maryland, known for the state's earliest Colonial settlements, is composed of three of the state's oldest counties: St. Mary's, Charles, and Calvert. Although largely agricultural and maritime in outlook, this region was also the birthplace of the nation's ideal of religious freedom and many of its greatest citizens, including leaders of the Revolution, the early national government, and the state. Many of their homes and churches survive as historic landmarks, or their existence has been documented and preserved for posterity.

Petersburg is one of Virginia’s oldest cities. The story begins with a frontier boundary that also allowed trade with the Native Americans. Located on the banks of the Appomattox River, Petersburg’s deepwater harbor was a depot for all supplies going south. In 1830, the first train tracks leading into North Carolina were located here.

Petersburg became the largest transportation hub in the state. Best known for its contribution to the tobacco industry, by the 20th century it was also a leader in numerous other businesses, some so big they were featured at the 1939 World’s Fair. In the 1750s, Quakers from Pennsylvania and Virginia settled in the North Carolina Piedmont, eventually organizing Spring Friends Meeting in 1763. The Friends still gather by the spring and wait for the light to descend upon them 250 years later. Spring Meeting nursed the injured and dying in the American Revolution, said goodbye to members migrating to farmlands in the Northwest, stood against slavery in the antebellum years, helped reconstruct the South in the late 1800s, and held their pacifist beliefs throughout the 20th century. A record-setting World Series pitcher, leading educators, missionaries, and major figures in North Carolina Quaker leadership fill its rolls. Persevering through the ebb and flow of revivals and apathy, Spring Meeting has left its mark in history. Today the spring flows, the front door remains unlocked, and members still gather on First Sundays.

The Grand Avenue, America's Main Street, a National Embarrassment—Pennsylvania Avenue has been known by these names and more since it was laid out across farmland in the 1790s. From the beginning, the one-mile stretch between the Capitol building and the White House was intended to be a symbolic link between the key branches of government, but over more than two centuries, it has witnessed grandeur and squalor, national pride and neglect, and crowds full of celebration and rage. While the pillars of government at either end have stood watch, the avenue has seen buildings, institutions, and neighborhoods rise, prosper, decay, and fall. A grand marketplace, a major train station, dozens of hotels and restaurants—all thrived, yet only a handful remain. Mount Rainier began its history as an incorporated town in
1910, with the merging of several subdivisions that straddled
Bunker Hill Road, a major route between the ports of Georgetown
and Bladensburg. Before the Civil War, Thomas and Anna Clemson
owned a 100-acre farm that fronted on that important road. Their
family letters provide some of the earliest writings about the area. In
1891, Elizabeth and Estcourt Sawyer purchased the Clemson farm
and named their subdivision Mount Rainier. In 1899, the real estate
became especially attractive to commuters when the District of
Columbia's streetcar system was extended through the heart of the
present-day city; that route, now known as Rhode Island Avenue, later
became part of US Route 1.

Located in the rural northeastern part of North Carolina, Somerset was cumulatively home to more than 800 enslaved blacks and four generations of a planter family.

When the institution of slavery ended in 1865, Somerset Place was the third largest plantation in North Carolina. During the 80 years that Somerset was an active plantation, hundreds of acres were farmed for rice, corn, oats, wheat, peas, beans, and flax. Today, Somerset Place is preserved as a state historic site offering a realistic view of what it was like for the slaves and freemen who once lived and worked on the plantation, once one of the Upper South's most prosperous enterprises.
