Plans to establish the first public institution of higher education in the Dayton region were laid in 1961. At the time, Dayton was the second largest metropolitan city in Ohio. Established in Cincinnati in 1856 by German immigrant Franz Rudolph Wurlitzer, the music dealer became the largest outlet for band instruments in the United States by 1865. During the silent film era in the early twentieth century, Wurlitzer manufactured nearly 2,250 theater organs, affectionately dubbed "Mighty Wurlitzers." Many of these instruments still provide concert music today. Wyoming, Michigan, became a city in 1959, the same year Alaska and Hawaii became states, but its history began more than a century earlier. The Delaware Indians were nomadic and often inhabited the Yorktown area. The early settlers in Yorktown found the tribe to be friendly and accepted their helpful offers of trading goods and giving guidance for planting crops. Since it contained two bodies of water, Yorktown was a natural choice for the location of a mill. Oliver H. Smith platted the original Town of Yorktown in 1837. The main business district was never more than two and a half blocks long, but throughout the years other businesses built along the main street outside of the original area. In the latter half of the 19th century, the city of Ypsilanti went through a rapid transition from a small farming community to a center of education and business. By 1900, Ypsilanti was nationally known for three things: the Michigan Central Gardens, the mineral wells, and underwear. The gardens were designed by famed landscape gardener John Laidlaw, who studied gardening in his native Scotland before coming to the United States.
