A Chronological History of Canaan, Vermont

Regular price $22.99 Sale price $16.09 Save 30%People in Canaan take pride in their independent nature and "can do" attitude. The myriad of activities (moose festival, soft ball tournaments, sugar on snow social, art in the park exhibit, historical society, parades, variety shows, dances, American Legion functions, church suppers, etc.) conducted by members of the community demonstrate that given a project they will successfully carry it out with a high degree of competence and professionalism.

A Crowded Hour
9781634990226
Regular price $25.95 Sale price $18.17 Save 30%Other developments heightened the intensity of this "crowded hour." Simmering ethnic tensions, skyrocketing inflation, as well as loftier questions regarding the meaning of American citizenship or the impact of a growing government bureaucracy affected every aspect of people's lives. Patriotic women stepped into male-dominated occupations to meet labor demands; at war's end, many reluctantly returned to traditional gender roles. Furthermore, the war advanced three long-debated social crusades: women's suffrage, prohibition, and anti-prostitution/venereal disease efforts. Capping things off, the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic killed more than 1,100 Milwaukeeans and 50 million people world-wide.

A Guide to Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hingham Volume I
9781634990264
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%During each year many questions are posed to me regarding Hingham's natural and historic resources. Without question, the most sought after information is for a history of the town's old buildings. Invariably I am asked, 'Where is and how old is the oldest house in Hingham?'
Unfortunately, the oldest house is not yet known. There are no comprehensive records. Hingham's pioneers were too fully occupied in clearing the land for planting and grazing fields, building stone fences and in other pursuits necessary for survival in a new land to record the date on which their house, barn, or saw mill frame was raised. Many of them could not write further than to put their mark on official documents.
How then could they know that every swing of the axe and hammer was paving the way toward that day when the 'shot heard round the world' would give birth to the American Republic?

A Guide to the Gold Rush Country of California
9781634990257
Regular price $24.99 Sale price $17.49 Save 30%In this book Frank Lorey covers the historic towns and mining locations in the eleven counties which produced the vast majority of California's golden wealth. Most are situated along and nearby to Highway 49, known as California's "Golden Highway." Today many are nothing more than historic locations, having become ghost towns long ago, but some are still quite lively locations.
The book was developed from a popular series of articles in the California Geology and California Mining Journal magazines over the years, starting in 1985. Frank Lorey has taken many of the photographs during his travels in the area, and for a few years he lived just outside the gold rush country.

A Nevada Life
9781634993098
Regular price $26.99 Sale price $18.89 Save 30%A Nevada Life is the biography of artist Richard Guy Walton, Nevada's "Grand Old Man" of abstract art. Less well known is that Walton the gifted painter was also a prolific author of nonfiction and autobiographical novels. Born in San Francisco when there were still horses in the streets, and raised in the Central Valley, in 1929 at age fifteen he "entered Reno," as he related in his first novel, "got off the train, and was never quite the same." This eccentric and brilliant man was shaped by and helped shape Nevada's cultural history during Reno's heyday and Virginia City's epoch as a bohemian mecca.
A Nevada Life surveys Walton's artworks and writings as it follows the life of this colorful original. The narrative reveals new angles on such icons of Reno's past as Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Robert Caples, Robert Laxalt and the daughters of Judge George Bartlett. Through Walton's first marriage the reader hears the intimate story of a Basque institution, the Etcheberrys' Santa Fe Hotel, and experiences life in a Basque sheep camp. Walton's sojourns in Hollywood bring in composer Bernard Herrmann, writer Norman Corwin, director Alfred Hitchcock and more.
Walton died in 2005 at ninety-one.

Some will be rebuilt or repaired, and some will be torn down; however, many are left exactly as they were over a year ago and may possibly remain that way forever.
These are not your usual abandoned buildings. They are the remains of people's homes, businesses, boats, and livelihoods. This book is a respectful representation of the destruction that Hurricane Michael left and the bittersweet beauty of the abandoned buildings still standing.
In Abandoned After the Storm: Hurricane Michael, photographer Kim Hill allows a glimpse into the remains of what was left in hopes of drawing attention to the struggle that the people of the panhandle are still dealing with.

They are residual pieces of history and decay, of the days gone by. They can be found driving down backroads, walking down spooky alleyways, and investigating abandoned homes and businesses. We are usually too busy with the hustle and bustle of everyday life to notice. Some, if not all, of these leftover bones will be treated as an eyesore or a nuisance and will eventually be destroyed without ever being documented by pen, paper, or photography.
Documenting these remaining formations through her own eyes and a photo lens, the author and photographer of this book, April Wood Holdridge, invites you to join her as she tries to slow time enough for you to appreciate the magnificence of the descent of the days gone by.

Abandoned Alaska
9781634992176
Regular price $23.99 Sale price $16.79 Save 30%Completed in 1911, the Copper River Northwestern Railway allowed Alaska's mining industry to flourish. Copper and gold prospecting townships and camps spread rapidly in the following thirty years. Far-flung glacier-side bunkhouses and angling stations dotted the wild landscape, with workers coming from all around the world to seek their fortune. The sudden closing of the Kennecott copper mine in 1938 left many of these industrial and residential structures abandoned. Leaving with only what they could carry, the miners left plates on tables and sheets on beds. Preserved by their remoteness and Alaska's harsh freezing temperatures, the sites retain many of these precious artifacts. Most still lie where they were left, almost a century ago.
Photographer Paul Scannell has spent years hiking to the region's precariously perched mountain-top copper mines and remote gold mining sites with the aim of capturing America's slowly disappearing frontier history. His fascination with dereliction and its haunting beauty grows with each new adventure. Observing nature reclaim its territory, for him, holds irresistible drama. This book maps a personal journey, driven by loss and defined by discovery and healing. It is a collection of his photographs, travel notes and observations.

Abandoned Albany

This collection of beautifully haunting photos and narratives help viewers envision these places in their glory days. Now in their post-apocalyptic state, readers feel every cold gust of wind, and hear every creaking steel door and breaking shard of glass.

of natural gas were depleted causing the factories that employed
most of the town to close their doors and move onto other areas of
the United States to continue their business. Once General Motors
moved in, things started looking up for the city. However, like many
other automobile industry boomtowns in the Rust Belt, once the
industry was outsourced to other countries and the plants closed,
the population fled for greener pastures. The once vibrant city was
left to decay. Schools that once vibrated with the laughter of kids
were left without students; clubs once filled with laughter and joy
were forgotten in the face of overwhelming poverty; hotels that
housed those traveling through were shuttered and turned into
cheap housing before eventually being closed by the city; and
shopping malls that once had thousands of customers were largely
forgotten as the anchor stores closed for lack of profits. A place that
once housed over 70,000 citizens has lost over 20% of the
population since the deindustrialization of the 1970s and 1980s.

Industry, intent on extracting the land of its essence, set up operations, then walked away when there was nothing left worth taking. Civilization has always pushed into the frontier, and quite often the frontier pushes back.
Areas like the forsaken homesteads of Wonder Valley and the abandoned mining operations of Joshua Tree seem simultaneously depleted yet majestically audacious in their quiet desolation, juxtaposed against the breathtaking landscapes of the desert.
Abandoned California: The Mojave Desert is a collection of photographs and writings by Andy Willinger that capture the majesty of these forsaken buildings, vehicles and artifacts of the Mojave's once vibrant past. These sites have become meaningful, unintended statements - not only as vibrant, ephemeral artworks of minimal beauty, but as testament to the impact on nature by humanity. Undaunted, the Mojave Desert continues to brashly flaunt its skill in overcoming man's attempts to conquer it.
