Waverly Hills Sanatorium

9781467149990

$21.99

High on a hill on the south side of Louisville, Kentucky, a massive Tudor Gothic Revival building still stands as a testament to past struggles with a deadly disease. The structure was once part of the sprawling complex of Waverly Hills Sanatorium, established in 1910 for the treatment of tuberculosis. Waverly Hills expanded rapidly, with racially segregated facilities housing up to five hundred patients a day by World War II before new medical developments led to the institution’s closure in 1961. Join author Lynn Pohl for an investigation of Waverly Hills Sanatorium’s rich history and mixed legacy, explored through photographs, public health records, newspaper accounts and the stories of patients and employees.

Marshall Myers

Enslavement in Kentucky

9781467152358

$21.99

Between the time Daniel Boone led his settlers through the Cumberland Gap and the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment, slavery was prominent in the Commonwealth. In several constitutional conventions, founders and lawmakers questioned the legality and appropriateness of the issue. At every possible juncture, wealthy slaveholders defended the institution, while abolitionists fought one another over the question of slavery. As a result of the fighting, the Thirteenth Amendment was not ratified until the 1970s. Author and historian Marshall Myers dives deep into the means both slaveholders and abolitionists used to secure a policy that supported their beliefs.

Thomas Jefferson and the Kentucky Constitution

9781467158282

$24.99

A Major Influence in Kentucky Life

Founding Father Thomas Jefferson had a strong but little-known connection with the constitution of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He had personal and politically motivated influence on the 1792 charter and secretly wrote some controversial state resolutions. Author Denis Fleming draws on firsthand accounts from Jefferson, John Breckinridge and the rarely used papers of George Nicholas, the brain behind Kentucky’s first constitution, to uncover a huge influence from these men. He also demonstrates that modern reforms in job creation, education and the structure of government are rooted in parts of the document favored by Jefferson but dramatically interpreted by today’s governors, legislators and judges.

Richard Parker

Wicked Western Kentucky

9781467150521

$21.99

Western Kentucky has always had a dark side, despite being the “Birthplace of Bluegrass Music.” Mary James Trotter, an arrested moonshine-selling grandma, remarked to a judge that she “simply had to sell a little liquor now and then to take care of my four grandchildren.” Rod Ferrell led a bloodsucking vampire cult in Murray, Kentucky, and traumatized parents of the 1990s. In the early morning of July 13, 1928, at the “Castle on the Cumberland,” seven men were put to death in Kentucky’s deadliest night of state-sponsored executions. Join award-winning author Richard Parker as he takes you on a journey through fifteen of Western Kentucky’s most nefarious people, places and events.

Hidden History of a Hidden Gem

LaGrange, Kentucky, was founded in 1827 with a mainline railroad track running down Main Street. Home to many farmers and industrialists, the city has a rich history and is even tied, in a way, to the Marquis de Lafayette. Join author Nancy Stearns Theiss as she details the deep history of the Kindness Capitol of Kentucky.

Dan Isenstein

Tales from the Kentucky Hemp Highway

9781467148832

$21.99

Among the many hidden gems in Bluegrass history is the state's long relationship with hemp, a history noted by a historical "Hemp Highway" designation. Archibald McNeil was the first to plant the crop in the state in 1775. In 1803, John Wesley Hunt opened the first hemp bagging factory in the United States and helped transform Lexington into the "Athens of the West." Another grower, Thomas Barbee, had a child with an enslaved person and freed his children on his deathbed. His grandson became a hemp grower as well. New organizations like Homestead Alternatives and Zelios Inc. have taken that history into the modern world. Author Dan Isenstein details the history of the crop and the historic trail dedicated to it.

A History of Pewee Valley

9781467155083

$24.99

A Hidden Gem in Kentucky.

Eighteen miles outside Louisville lies the picturesque town of Pewee Valley. The town was originally founded on a land grant around 1800 and later named after the Eastern Wood Pewee, which, according to an elaborate legend, exuberantly proclaimed the creation of an Eden east of Louisville. Residents of and visitors to this fairy-tale suburb have included tycoons, politicians, painters, photographers, poets and novelists. Among them was Annie Fellows Johnston, who used Pewee Valley as the setting for her famed “Little Colonel” books, which Shirley Temple brought to the big screen in 1935. A preserve of rural manors and picturesque cottages, Pewee survived Civil War, the Depression and developers’ bulldozers. David Russell reveals this storied history.

Bluegrass Bourbon Barons

9781467150132

$21.99

Kentucky is the home of bourbon, and there are a proud few who helped usher the industry into prominence. Learn about men like bourbon baron Isaac Bernheim, who founded the Bernheim Forest and Research Center, or John Douglas, who built a racetrack for the trotter racing industry and was known as the “Prince of Sports.” George Garvin Brown and his business partner, George Forman, formed the Brown-Forman Company, which today is one of the largest American-owned companies in the spirits and wine business. With such enormous wealth came the temptation for fraud, which led to several bourbon leaders becoming involved in some of Kentucky’s famous scandals. Author and Kentucky historian Bryan S. Bush details the intoxicating history of bourbon’s biggest historical names.

Meet one of the nation’s foremost advocates for voting rights for women who was a native of the city. Visit the many small hamlets around Lexington that were settlements for the formerly enslaved. Lexington was the state’s first capital and the nation’s first community to establish an urban service boundary to regulate growth and preserve horse farms. Seventh-generation Kentuckian and Lexington native Foster Ockerman Jr. offers an updated history.

Garrard County in World War II

9780738541983

$24.99

Images of America: Garrard County in World War II depicts the citizens of a small, rural central Kentucky county who served their nation in war-torn areas worldwide and on the home front. Images courtesy of veterans and their families show the sacrifices made and honor those who served. With photographs of all branches of the armed services, the county's war story is told in representative vignettes at numerous fronts. Through interviews, news accounts, and letters, many veterans' stories of courage, humor, and despair come to life. Here at home, patriotic efforts began in 1940 when school children made bundles for Britain and continued throughout the war years with residents sacrificing at home to spend every available dime on war bonds. In fact, in 1943, Garrard Countians bought more bonds per capita than citizens in any other Kentucky county. To reward their patriotism and sacrifice, in March 1945, the government commissioned the USS Garrard, an attack transport ship. A member of the crew donated to the county's historical society photos of the ship and his diary. Survivors of the USS Garrard held a reunion here in 2002.

Scientific Breakthroughs in the Bluegrass State

Scientists and inventors who lived, worked or were educated in the Bluegrass State have made fundamental contributions to biology, chemistry, physics and technology. Biologist Thomas Hunt Morgan laid the foundation for modern genetics. Chemist William Lipscomb made important discoveries about the structure of molecules and chemical bonding. Astrophysicist J. Richard Gott is a leading expert on cosmology, general relativity and time travel. And inventor George Devol built the world's first programmable industrial robot. Kentucky scientists have also been awarded four Nobel Prizes. Science teacher Duane S. Nickell offers a glimpse into the lives of seventeen scientific heroes from Kentucky.

Keven McQueen

The Judge Mulligan Poisoning and Other Historic Lexington Crimes

9781467159371

$24.99

Author Keven McQueen proposes a new suspect in the famous 1904 attempted poisoning of local poet Judge Mulligan’s family. Join him on a sordid trip through the Horse Capital of the World. From a mayhem-filled day at the county fair in 1854 to the lynching of William Barker at the courthouse a few years later, old-timey Lexington was no place for the faint of heart. This was an age when Lexingtonians sought justice in extralegal ways and sometimes inspired mobs of fellow citizens to join in the villainy, like the assemblage that wreaked awful recompense on adulterous George Grigg for killing his lover’s husband. In 1873, Montgomery Hobbs Parker shot his young farmhand John Wills just outside city limits, but the details remain in dispute, just like the unsolved 1908 murder of traveling circus employee Stephen Diesback at the Bluegrass Fairgrounds.

Louisville in World War II

9780738542133

$24.99

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Louisville mobilized to fight Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Citizens of all races and economic classes united in the effort, both abroad and at home. Louisville's many industries banded together as well: the Mengel Company made wood products used in the war, and its staff burned a Nazi flag in an employee-held rally; Reynolds Aluminum Company manufactured arms and other war materials; Liberty National Bank sold war bonds at special windows; and the Louisville Ford Motor Company made at least 93,389 military jeeps out of the roughly 500,000 employed in the war. Perhaps Louisville's most significant war contribution, though, was the use of Bowman Field as a United States Army Air Corps Detachment Squadron. The pilots trained there were vital to the war effort.

History of Harrodsburg, A

9781467149068

$21.99

Established in 1774 by the famed pioneer James Harrod, the city of Harrodsburg was the first European heritage town west of the Allegheny Mountains. With the discovery of a number of mineral springs in the area, several local residents thought that the springs could be turned into a tourist attraction. During the early nineteenth century, Greenville Springs, Harrodsburg Springs and Graham Springs became some of the most popular spas and hotels in the South, and Harrodsburg became known as the “Saratoga of the South.” These springs offered rest, relaxation and accommodations for the entire family. Join historian Bobbi Dawn Rightmyer as she revisits the stories behind how simple mineral springs turned a small town into a nationwide vacation hotspot.
