Author Ed Shankman and illustrator Dave O'Neill began creating their award-winning children's books in New England, with stories on Boston, Cape Cod, Maine, and Vermont. In 2011 they turned their attention to New Orleans and in 2013 to the state of Florida. Their latest book, When a Lobster Buys a Bathrobe, does not happen in just one place, but wherever lobsters are found -- and that's almost everywhere Shankman & O'Neill have traveled before...and beyond! With its bouncing rhymes and colorful illustrations, everyone will love reading this charming story again and again!

Jack and Remy's Bayou Band

9781941879214

$17.99

Jack’s dream is to have a band. Not just any band, a band filled with his bayou neighbors including his new friend, Remy the raccoon. Jack tap-tap-taps his paws as he imagines the music! He can already hear the chank-a-chank of a rubboard and the thump-thump-thump of the drums. Forming a band that includes an alligator, a snake, some turtles, a bullfrog, and a possum isn't always easy! First they will have to overcome their distrust of their fellow creatures and learn to work together. When some poachers invade their home and try to capture their friends, the band must come up with a plan. With a little perseverance and creativity, they create music that turns enemies into friends and unites all the residents of the bayou in this charming tale for emerging readers. The clever use of onomatopoeia allows little ones to sound out words as they “read” along in this musical tale with a Louisiana sound!

Great Grub from the Meerkat Café

9781455625116

$21.95

Great Grub from the Meerkat Café is an interactive, family cookbook paired with hilarious and wildly educational facts about the creatures of southern Africa’s Kalahari Desert. The book’s simple recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and desserts with names like Dung Beetle Pancakes and Spaghetti with Grasshopper Heads have just enough “yuck factor” to greatly appeal to children, while parents will also be pleased that the recipes provide savory substitutions. Sliced Brown ’N Serve sausages can be substituted for sliced dung beetles. Frozen peas can be used instead of grasshopper heads. Families will have loads of fun preparing a “smorgas-bug” in their own kitchen burrow. The grub’s on! In addition to feeding the stomach, feed the soul! Each recipe has a Food For Thought sidebar, which provides families with surprising, funny, and sometimes yucky information about the animals, birds, and insects of southern Africa’s Kalahari Desert. The easy-to-understand recipes, with measurements in both standard and metric, were tested by a professional chef. A wise traditional African proverb reflects the theme of each recipe. This book promises to “worm” its way into the heart of every family member. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind, fun cookbook to give as a gift or to get your future chef cooking in the kitchen with you . . . this is it!
