The Everett Massacre

Sunday, November 5, 1916 marked the bloodiest battle in Pacific Northwest labor history. On that day, about 300 members of the Industrial Workers of the World (the I.W.W.) boarded the steamers Verona and Calista from Seattle and headed north toward Port Gardner Bay. The I.W.W. (or Wobblies) planned a public demonstration in Everett that afternoon, to be held on the corner of Hewitt and Wetmore, a spot commonly used by street speakers. Hoping to gain converts to their dream of One Big Union, the Wobblies began street speaking in Everett during a local shingle weavers' strike, encountering brutal suppression by local law officers. Free speech soon became the dominant issue. The number of demonstrators and the violence of the response from law enforcement grew as the weeks wore on. On November 5th, word reached Everett that a group of armed anarchists was coming to burn their town. 200 citizen deputies, under the authority of Snohomish County Sheriff Donald McRae, met to repel the invaders. The Verona arrived first, pulling in alongside the dock. McRae asked "Who is your leader?" When he was told "We are all leaders!", he informed passengers they could not land. A single shot was fired, followed by minutes of chaotic shooting. Whether the first shot came from boat or dock was never determined. Passengers aboard the Verona rushed to the opposite side of the ship, nearly capsizing the vessel. Bullets pierced the pilot house, and the Verona's captain struggled to back it out of port. The Calista returned to Seattle, without trying to land.

As the country sought healing and peace after the Civil War, Wisconsin citizens took up Pres. Abraham Lincoln's challenge to care for him who shall have borne the battle. Their efforts paved the way for the establishment in Milwaukee of one of the original three branches of the National Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. In May 1867, the first 60 veterans, including a musician from the War of 1812, moved to a single building on 400 rolling acres west of Milwaukee. By the end of the 19th century, the bustling campus boasted its own hospital, chapel, library, theater, and recreation hall, in addition to the grand main building. Subsequent wars and military conflicts created a need for additional buildings and services. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011, the campus continues to offer a healing environment for today's patients and stands as a testimony to advances in veteran health care.

In 1875, Isaac Roberts, a farmer who owned more than 600 acres, left a parcel of his land to A. G. Roberts, who then sold the right-of-way to the Texas and Pacific Railway for $25. Just a few miles from Cincinnati's eastern suburbs are the small towns of Batavia and Williamsburg in Clermont County, Ohio, the seventh county established in the state and the 11th oldest in the Northwest Territory. In 1793, William Lytle and his brother John came from Kentucky to the scenic area on the East Fork of the Little Miami River to do surveying work. A short distance from their camp, a tornado had leveled many trees, making it easier for Lytle to clear 40 acres with the help of James Kain and his two sons, who were to become Williamsburg's first citizens. In 1796, a site for Williamsburg was platted by William and John Lytle and Adam Bricker. In 1801, Williamsburg was established as the county seat, and it remained so until the seat of government moved to Batavia in 1824. William Lytle also played a part in Batavia's early history, having purchased a 1,000-acre tract on which the town is located and then selling it to George Ely, an early settler. In 1814, Ely and partner David Bryan, deciding the settlers in the area "should be bound together in a more tangible manner than the bonds of brotherhood," recorded the plat for the town of Batavia, eight miles to the west of Williamsburg.

Fort Oglethorpe
