North Brunswick, a large town spread over 12 square miles, has a rich history extending back to the early 1600s, when its only occupants were members of the Lenni-Lenape tribe. Some of the earliest establishments included the Black Horse Tavern building, which in 1670 was a stagecoach stop, and the Lion Tavern. By 1750, a gristmill operated near where a dam is currently located on Farrington Lake and was later joined by a snuff mill and tannery. From 1775 through 1900, the area was almost entirely agricultural. The first church, the Georges Road Baptist Church, was erected in 1847, and the first school committee was elected in 1829. By the dawn of the 20th century, North Brunswick began to come into its own, projecting the image of the thriving community it is today.

Originally part of the Lugo family's vast Rancho San Antonio, Huntington Park evolved at the beginning of the 20th century because enterprising developers A. L. Burbank and E. V. Baker gained control of 100 former rancho acres called the Sunrise Tract. First renamed La Park, this land just south of Los Angeles was later called Huntington Park, after Burbank and Baker granted tycoon Henry Huntington a right-of-way to put his railway line along Randolph Street in 1902. Incorporated in 1906, the city of Huntington Park became a significant freight station for cargo coming to and going from Los Angeles. A working-class suburb throughout its first century, the nicknamed City of Perfect Balance saw a population shift beginning in the 1970s. Latinos have assimilated into the community's fabric, revitalizing the busy central business district of Pacific Boulevard. Huntington Park is a central hub of the Latino community in Los Angeles County.

In August 1933, Eleanor Roosevelt visited the impoverished coal communities of north central West Virginia. Suffering from the effects of the Great Depression, these coal families looked to the First Lady for help out of the devastating economic times. With the migration of African American sharecroppers to northern cities in the first half of the 20th century, the African American population of Milwaukee grew from fewer than 1,000 in 1900 to nearly 22,000 by 1950. Most settled around a 12-block area along Walnut Street that came to be known as Milwaukee's Bronzeville, a thriving residential, business, and entertainment community. Three Mile Bay, located just below the Canadian border in the town of Lyme, was settled between 1810 and 1820. Early immigrants from Canada and Europe were drawn by the abundance of water-powered mills and factories along the area's waterways. At the mouth of Three Mile Creek stood the sawmill of Peter and Richard Estes, built in 1820; from 1860 to the 1900s, limestone quarried in the Three Mile Bay area was known for its superior quality. Resident Asa Wilcox built 48 brigs, propellers, schooners, and other seafaring vessels from 1835 to 1853, some ultimately joining the approximately 500 shipwrecked vessels now resting at the bottom of Lake Ontario. Fishing and selling potash were often carried on by farmers as side ventures. When loads of potash, and occasionally wheat, were hauled to Albany, on the return trip merchandise was brought back to be sold in local stores. For generations, families developed their trades and helped to sustain the hard-working people of the hamlet of Three Mile Bay.

Medina County was founded in 1848 by settlers from Europe and the eastern United States. At the time, Native Americans still lived on that land, which they called "Comancheria." The first wave of Chinese immigrants came to Chicagoland in the 1870s, after the transcontinental railway connected the Pacific Coast to Chicago. In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act prevented working-class Chinese from entering the U.S., except men who could prove they were American citizens. For more than 60 years, many Chinese immigrants had acquired documents helping to prove that they were born in America or had a parent who was a citizen. The first is named after Pierre LeMoyne, Sieur d'Iberville, commander of the French fleet who initiated settlement of Louis XIV's claim to the Mississippi Valley and adjacent coast of the Mexican Gulf in 1699. The latter is named for Raymond St. Martin de Pattier (or Jorquiboey), who married into the pioneer Ladnier family that homesteaded the north side of Biloxi Bay in the late 1700s and were the first landowners when the colonial era ended and the American flag was hoisted in 1811. After statehood in 1817, foreign and American emigrants arrived by ship and covered wagon. Before the Civil War, the families north of the bay included Spanish, Austrian, Italian, and their African chattel. From this frontier beginning, farmers and fishermen spawned ranching, timber, and seafood industries as well as shipbuilding and mercantile enterprises. By World War II, it was a town, and in 1988 it became a city within the core of this old frontier.

Moses Cleaveland's surveyors began dividing Connecticut's Western Reserve into townships and tracts for sale to settlers in 1796. The southern portion of Euclid Township included a wooded plateau that could be harvested and cleared for farming and orchards. Small factories made wooden baskets for carrying produce to the markets in the growing city of Cleveland to the west. Streambeds deeply eroded the edge of the plateau, exposing a rich layer of dense sandstone, and as a result quarries developed along Euclid Creek where this valuable stone was most accessible. A small, separate community called Bluestone grew to support the industry but was absorbed when the quarries became uneconomical. In 1877, a plank toll road named Mayfield was built eastward from Cleveland through the area that became South Euclid. In the early 1900s, the planks were replaced by paved road and an interurban rail line carrying both passenger and freight cars. The road eased transportation for farmers and became the heart of today's business district.

Erie Street Cemetery is Cleveland's oldest existing cemetery. Today downtown Cleveland towers over this peaceful plot of land, which has remained essentially unchanged since it was opened as a burial ground in 1826 at the far edge of the town, whose population was only about 800 at the time. Created from part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Indian reservation, 1,008 square miles of rich agricultural land became home to over 5,000 homesteaders with a run at high noon on April 19, 1892. The county has a rich heritage as about 55 communities and over 100 school districts were established during the first 10 years. As Oklahoma was a territory at the time, only Congress could establish a county seat, and it named Cloud Chief, with a population of about 20 or 30, as the county seat. According to history, Cloud Chief, located in the southeast corner of the county, had several businesses established by midafternoon and a population of over 3,000 that first night. In 1900, the people of Washita County, by a vote of 1,349 in favor to 282 in opposition, illegally moved the courthouse under gunfire to Cordell, which was located in the exact center of the county. Today Washita County has 44 ghost towns, which had a post office or a community store that no longer exist.

In the 1850s and 1860s, German immigrants joined Hispanic merchants to form a vibrant business community. Rancho Cañada de Guadalupe, La Visitacion y Rodeo Viejo was named in July 1777 by a party of Spanish priests and soldiers who lost their way in heavy fog while en route to the Presidio. Now called Visitacion Valley, this area was the only Mexican land grant within San Francisco deeded to an Anglo. Windmills pumped water to irrigate the fields of early settlers' cattle farms, nurseries, and vegetable gardens, leading to the nickname Valley of the Windmills. Folk art has long been a part of the cultural heritage of the Hudson River Valley. The Hudson River school of painting traces its roots to the valley, as does a unique decorative style of stoneware—preserve pots and jugs with scenes of birds, flowers, and animals that were part of the potter's life. While the Hudson River paintings, usually commissioned by wealthy landowners, have achieved universal acclaim, the utilitarian stoneware, owned by even the least successful merchants and farmers, has been widely collected but little understood. Poughkeepsie Potters and the Plague makes an important contribution toward an understanding of the stoneware tradition of the Hudson Valley. Based on years of research, it uncovers for the first time the significance of early stoneware production at Poughkeepsie and outlines its one-hundred-year history. Astonishingly, its early beginnings may be attributed to a series of yellow-fever epidemics that struck New York City during the 1795–1805 period. These epidemics forced a migration of people away from the beleaguered city to places such as Poughkeepsie. Poughkeepsie Potters and the Plague began with a dated butter pot that was made by the first stoneware potters of Poughkeepsie as a tribute to the epidemic victims of New York City in 1798—a single piece of pottery transcending time and location to bring to life the historical triumph of the enduring human spirit.

Incorporated as Gilman in 1892, Issaquah was among the earliest communities settled on the east side of Lake Washington. By 1900, immigrants and newcomers were flooding into the town now known as Issaquah to work the mines, mill lumber, and establish farms and businesses. Though the town's growth dwindled with the coal market in the 1920s, families first attracted by the area's business opportunities stayed because they loved the close-knit community.
