Lehighton was the first settlement in Carbon County. This idyllic community sits between two beautiful Pennsylvania State Parks, the Lehigh Gorge and Beltzville. The Lehigh Valley Railroad transformed Lehighton into a bustling railroad town, where free enterprise reigned. The LVRR quickly became the major employer of the town's population and was fully integrated into the very fabric of Lehighton, its people, and the culture. Local business thrived, and the success of the Lehigh Stove Company, the Moxie Bottling Company, and the Lehigh Wagon Company enticed other businesses to move into the area. Along with hauling anthracite coal, the LVRR began passenger service, and Lehighton was on the railroad's main line. The scenery that brought droves of Victorians to ride the Lehigh Valley Railroad and other Pennsylvania trains, today brings tourism of another kind. White-water rafting on the Lehigh River is some of the best in the state, and fishermen can still land native trout.

The Great Depression came early to St. Augustine with the end of the Florida land boom in 1926, followed by the stock market collapse in 1929.

Hotels closed, a major bank failed, subdivisions folded, and tourism was reduced to a trickle. The city’s main employer, the Florida East Coast Railway, went into receivership in 1931, and public works projects sought to bring relief to the unemployed. The economy slowly improved toward the end of the 1930s, but it was World War II that brought economic recovery to the town. Local hotels were taken over for military training, and servicemen on leave from nearby military bases flooded the town, bringing prosperity once again to the Ancient City.

With the development of photography in the mid-nineteenth century the grandeur of Littleton's mountain scenery soon began to attract photographers to the area, and their images of the mirror-like lakes, winding rivers, dense, dark forests, and craggy mountains began a tourist boom that continues to this day.

In 1888, a passenger freight station was built by the Baltimore and Sparrows Point Railroad on land owned by Joshua J. Turner, a local businessman. The train stop was called Turner Station, and as the nearby community grew, it took on that name. The community's first church, St. Matthews Methodist Church, was founded in 1900, while the first public school, Turner Elementary School, was built in 1925. Adams Bar and Cocktail Lounge, an important entertainment establishment, came into being in 1933. It attracted top acts in African American music and comedy during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, including Red Foxx, Pearl Bailey, and Fats Domino. Turner Station was home to individuals who made lasting contributions to the state and nation, including Dr. Joseph Thomas, physician, businessman, and diplomat; Kweisi Mfume, NAACP president; Calvin Hill, former NFL star; and Kevin Clash, puppeteer.

Considered one of the world's most beautiful beaches for its sugar white sand and emerald blue-green waters, Panama City Beach has, until recently, remained one of Florida's undiscovered treasures.

First documented by Spanish explorers in the 1500s and later by the English, the region remained unsettled because of its inaccessibility and marauding renegade inhabitants. At a time when property was valued according to the crops it could grow, the beach was dismissed as a no man's land unsuitable for habitation. In January 1820, the acting governor of Kentucky, Gabriel Slaughter, signed a bill put before him by the state's legislature to create a new county from portions of Christian and Caldwell Counties in Western Kentucky.

Trigg County was named to honor Revolutionary Warsoldier and Native American fighter Col. Stephen Trigg. Organization of the county government commenced on May 15, 1820, at the home of Samuel Orr in the community of Warrenton. Justices of the Peace Boyd, Wadlington, Goode, Orr, Scott, Slaughter, Daniel, Fowler, and Dawson swore one another into office and set about the business of the new county. The village of Cadiz, located along the banks of Little River, was soon established as the county seat.

Author Thomas D. Harper is a native of Trigg County and possesses a passionate interest in the county's history. As a teacher of middle school social studies in Kentucky's public schools, Harper is able to share his love of regional, Kentucky, and American history with hundreds of students. With the coming of the Pennsylvania Railroad and bituminous coal mining, Greensburg by 1885 was growing, prospering, and bustling with commercial activity. Utilizing rare photographs, some unseen in sixty years, Greensburg concentrates on the city's evolution past 1900, into the years of boom and growth, and through the 1950s, hinting of future decline.
