Established in 1947 by the Sisters of St. Basil the Great, Manor College transformed the lives of generations of students over the last 75 years through its liberal arts and career-focused degree programs. Nestled immediately outside Philadelphia in the bucolic surroundings of Fox Chase Manor, Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, the college initially focused on providing a quality liberal arts education to young women from the Ukrainian American community and the Sisters of St. Basil the Great when it first opened. It blossomed into a dynamic community that championed career-oriented education; promoted its Ukrainian ethnic heritage and Catholic ties; and thrived on the deep and everlasting bond, nurtured through countless academic events and campus activities, between the sisters and their students. The visionary leadership of its nine female and male presidents carried it through important institutional changes, which included building and improving academic and residential structures, becoming a coeducational institution, and modernizing its curriculum with the recent debut of its first bachelor’s degree programs.

With an industrial foundation laid down more than 200 years ago, Beaver Falls quickly secured a role in history as one of the most well-established manufacturing towns in western Pennsylvania. Long-standing companies such as AMF and York Air Conditioning were sold or moved, while banks, industries, and businesses merged. The York County Shopping Center opened on the East End, attracting customers who had formerly shopped downtown. WSBA TV went on the air in 1952, starting a new era in communication and a business empire that still has a strong presence today. The band Live grew from a group of local high school students to well-known musicians that graced the cover of Rolling Stone. Jeff Koons became one of the most celebrated artists in the world, Kim Bracey became the first African American mayor, and York businessman Tom Wolf became governor. York continues to celebrate its rich heritage as the Factory Capital of the World.

Moraine State Park

9781467125260

$24.99

Venture into flora and fauna of Pennsylvania's Moraine State Park and uncover the hidden histories behind its natural treasures.

About 20,000 years ago, the late Wisconsinan glaciation reached its maximum extent. Glacial deposits identify the moraine, or farthest area covered by the glacier. Muddy Creek was a north-flowing stream that was blocked by the south-advancing glacier, forming a huge lake that lasted until the glacier dam began to retreat. The lake rapidly drained, eventually exposing the vast Muddy Creek basin. Dr. Frank Preston envisioned recreating the ancient glacial lake and worked with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to begin the project that became 16,725-acre Moraine State Park. Its centerpiece, man-made Lake Arthur and the surrounds, provide outstanding outdoor recreation and relaxation opportunities.

Panther Pride

$24.99

The University of Pittsburgh first fielded an intercollegiate basketball team in 1905, but an entire generation of fans has only heard or read about a small number of these colorful and outstanding players. An invitation to join the prestigious Big East Conference in 1982 opened the eyes of the nation to Panther basketball. Continuing a tradition of growth and excellence, the 2001-2002 Panthers again put University of Pittsburgh basketball on the map. Picked by the league coaches to finish sixth in the seven-team Big East Conference's West Division, Ben Howland directed the team to an overall record of 29-6, earning the Panthers the West Division regular-season championship. The Panthers then advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in twenty-eight years.

Panther Pride: University of Pittsburgh Men's Basketball is the pictorial history of Pittsburgh's basketball program, before and since the Big East Conference. Well before Dr. Roy Chipman, there was eccentric Doc Carlson. Long before All-American Charles Smith, there was Charley Hyatt. Twenty-eight years before Brandin Knight led his team to the Sweet Sixteen, Billy Knight led another remarkable Panther squad to the Elite Eight. From Motor Square Garden in East Liberty to the Pitt Stadium Pavilion and Fitzgerald Field House in Oakland, Pittsburgh basketball teams have provided their fans with exciting victories and heartbreaking defeats for close to a century.

Franklin and Marshall College

9780738536583

$24.99

Franklin & Marshall College is the thirteenth oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Benjamin Rush, who was largely responsible for the establishment of Franklin College in 1787, anticipated that it would promote the assimilation of Pennsylvania's Germanic population as contributing citizens of the new republic. The founders included four signers of the Declaration of Independence, three future governors of Pennsylvania, and four members of the Constitutional Convention. Named after Benjamin Franklin, its first benefactor, in 1853 Franklin College merged with Marshall College, which had been established by the German Reformed Church in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1836. Marshall College bought the faculty and the constellation of intellectual values that guided Franklin & Marshall over the next half-century. This collection of photographs presents important parts of Franklin & Marshall's history: the evolution of the campus, the establishment of intercollegiate athletic teams and social fraternities, curricular innovations, U.S. Navy programs that kept the college alive during World War II, the decision to become coeducational, and the emergence of Franklin & Marshall as a national liberal arts college.

Cumberland Valley

9780738574646

$24.99

Explore the rich history of Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania, and its surrounding areas.

Nestled between the Tuscarora and Blue Ridge Mountains is the center of the Cumberland Valley, an area settled by men and women who crossed the Susquehanna River and built their log cabins in the wilderness. These early settlers were hardy souls who confronted the hardships and struggles of Native American raids, the American Revolution, and the Civil War. In the 1800s, the iron industry sprang up in the small villages of Roxbury, Edenville, and Mont Alto, and academies and colleges were founded.

The late Victorian resorts of Pen Mar, Monterey, and Buena Vista drew visitors to the valley. Today, within the mountain-protected borders of Mother Cumberland, are the towns of Chambersburg, Mercersburg, Waynesboro, Greencastle, St. Thomas and other small communities each with a rich history of its own.

Forest Hills

9780738549873

$24.99

Aptly named because of its hilly terrain and abundance of trees, the area now known as Forest Hills was a dusty coal mining community in the late 1800s. Centered between two major roads, the Lincoln Highway (Ardmore Boulevard/U.S. Route 30) and the Greensburg Pike, Forest Hills was incorporated in 1919 in order to gain better representation for tax money. Technology put the town on the map with the first commercial licensed radio station broadcast in 1920 and the Westinghouse Atom Smasher, built in 1937. As the borough grew with new houses, schools, and parks, so did traditions such as the Fourth of July celebration at Forest Hills Park and the Bryn Mawr Corn Roast. Many who live in the community are third or fourth generation residents. Using vintage photographs, Forest Hills presents the untold story of this tight-knit community.

Ingram

9780738549934

$24.99

Founded in 1902, the history of Ingram borough goes back to 1752, when the land was part of Chartiers Township. A grand jury granted a petition to incorporate Ingram as a borough in 1902, and it was named after Thomas Ingram who owned much of the land. The new borough was promoted as a peaceful community located away from the smoke and noise of Pittsburgh's heavy industry. Efficient transportation came to the area in 1865 when the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad completed a line west of Pittsburgh known as the Panhandle. At its peak, a total of 98 trains operated along this route each day. With the coming of electric trolley cars and the formation of Pittsburgh Railways Company, Ingram had two reliable modes of travel.
Through vintage photographs, Ingram showcases how this dedicated and friendly community has forged into the 21st century while remaining committed to its many fond traditions.

Sayre dates to 1783, when a gristmill was built along Shepard Creek. Greater Sayre began around 1870 at a railroad junction near the Susquehanna River. Activity at that junction led to the community eventually named Sayre. Sayre experienced phenomenal growth with the expansion of the Lehigh Valley Railroad operations. Its reputation as a railroad town began to fade after World War II, ending with the demise of the railroad by the 1970s.
