In 1750, the deepwater port of Yorktown housed approximately 250-300 businesses, with as many as 2,000 people thriving in the small town. By 1781, the Revolutionary War's final siege had been staged, and the British were caught without resources to win the final battle against the American and Allied forces. In 1673, Louis Jolliet and Fr. Jacques Marquette were the first Europeans to explore the Mississippi and the Illinois River valleys. Their explorations took them through what is now Joliet. The city of Denver was born out of a small mining camp established in the late 1850s. Prescott was founded in 1864 as the territorial capital of Arizona. In 1900, the business center burned to the ground, but the courthouse in the town square was saved, and the burned-out area's former wooden buildings were replaced by brick structures.
