Discover through historic postcards how Butte, Montana went from a small placer gold mining camp to and on to become “The Richest Hill on Earth.”
Butte, Montana, began in 1864 as a small placer gold mining camp. By 1870, the placer deposits were depleted, and most miners left. A few remaining miners found significant silver ore in the nearby quartz lodes, but by the late 1870s, copper was the major ore in the district, and Butte became “The Richest Hill on Earth.” Thousands of immigrants came to Butte from throughout Europe to operate the underground mines, and the city grew to an unofficial estimate of about 90,000 residents in 1917–1918. The population of Butte slowly declined to about 35,000 residents when fewer miners were necessary after open-pit mining began in 1955. Today, Butte remains a city of great character and cultural diversity. The postcards in this book illustrate some of its history.

Historic Petoskey and the greater Little Traverse Bay area possess a wealth of natural and cultural gifts. Abundant natural resources set the stage for industries like the fur trade, lumbering, shipping, and limestone quarrying. Petoskey’s ideal location on the picturesque bay has attracted visitors and adventurers since the 1870s. In this unique volume, author C.S. On July 4, 1876, members of the Second Boston Party made camp at Antelope Spring on their way to California. To celebrate the country's centennial, the men prepared a ponderosa pine tree by stripping it of its branches and creating a flagpole. With the arrival of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in 1882, this flag staff was once again discovered. The area was growing in population, so it became necessary to establish a post office. Many names were proposed for the new town, such as Antelope City and Flagpole, but the name Flag Staff fit best. As an oasis in the middle of the southwest desert, Flagstaff has been a hub for many attractions surrounding the city, prompting visitors to send news of their experiences via a picture postcard. Many of the cards in this volume have messages and postmarks that help show a glimpse of what life was like in Arizona's High Country.

At the turn of the 20th century, as citizens were enjoying Parkersburg's business, political, and social atmosphere, the postcards industry was thriving on the public's demand for likenesses of interesting buildings, streets, parks, events, and even disasters.

Kankakee County was organized in early 1853. In June 1853, the village of Kankakee Depot, later known as the city of Kankakee, was declared the new county seat. The establishment of both Kankakee County and the city of Kankakee owed a great deal to the railroad, particularly the Illinois Central Railroad. By the end of the 19th century, the county had become an important railroad hub where several important lines converged and the city had become a commercial and manufacturing center. By 1900, Kankakee was a growing community possessing a vibrant economy and many fine public and private buildings. The city was also host to the Illinois Eastern Hospital for the Insane, renamed the Kankakee State Hospital in 1910, which at the beginning of the 20th century was the second-largest mental health facility in the United States. It was probably the Kankakee River that most clearly defi ned the community. Many of Kankakee's citizens boated on the beautiful river and enjoyed good times at the "new-fangled" amusement facility, Electric Park. The over 200 vintage postcards displayed in this book illustrate the exciting period from 1900 to 1916.

Once little more than a steamy, tropical jungle, Palm Beach was transformed in the early twentieth century by industrialist Henry Flagler and a handful of architects into a playground for the famous, wealthy, and powerful. There, in the garden of earthly delights, celebrities and capitalists enjoyed a variety of leisure and recreational activities—from parties and tennis to sunbathing and dining—and stayed in the most opulent accommodations ever conceived and constructed. Many who loved this lifestyle became part-time residents and built palatial homes for the winter months. To this day, Palm Beach remains one of America's toniest and most exclusive resorts.

The following year, it was renamed Fort Dodge in honor of US senator Henry Dodge of Wisconsin. After the troops were disbanded in 1854, Maj. William Williams purchased the existing buildings and infrastructure from the US government and platted the city. Over the course of the 19th century, Fort Dodge developed into a booming city known as the leading industrial and cultural center of northern Iowa. Deer Isle, a coastal town in Penobscot Bay, was settled by farmers and mariners in the 1760s after the end of the French and Indian War. People, freight, and mail came by water to the secluded island where mackerel and lobster fishing were the mainstays of the island's economy. In the late 19th century, granite from booming Stonington quarries was shipped by boat. Summer visitors began arriving by the boatload to rusticate in gracious inns and seasonal cottages. These became the subjects of vintage postcards, many created by local photographers capturing the views of harbors and towns, rural roads and bridges, masts of the great sailing vessels, and derricks of the large quarries.

By the end of the 18th century, the county, much smaller in geography by then, had become home to more than 15,000 residents. Communities such as Crisfield, Deal Island, Princess Anne, Smith Island, and others have thrived since that time, with the industries of agriculture, seafood, and tourism sustaining the hardworking and spirited residents who have made their home in this county by the Chesapeake Bay.

As postcards changed to linen and chrome, Midland also underwent dramatic changes. The city on the plains worked hard to become an indispensable part of the vast 1920s Permian Basin oil industry. Through historic postcards discover how Hilton Head Island went from a relatively dormant community to a renowned tourist destination.
English explorer Capt. William Hilton found the island and named Hilton Head after himself in 1663. After the Civil War was over, the island was relatively dormant for almost 100 years. The biggest event of the 20th century was the installation of electricity in 1950. Soon after, tourism to the area started when the Sea Crest Motel opened in 1955. In 1956, the James F. Byrnes Bridge was built, and the first grocery store opened near Coligny Plaza. Developer Charles Fraser visualized an environmentally friendly residential community and named it Sea Pines Plantation. Sea Pines Plantation wrote its first sales contract in 1958, and Fraser’s formula has since been copied around the world. In 1969, the Heritage Classic golf tournament set the island on a path to being nationally known.
Nelle Smith and Ora Smith, who arrived on the island in 1963, were true pioneers. They coauthored the book Paradise: Memories of Hilton Head Island in the Early Days, a historical memoir. Ora is a self-proclaimed archivist of modern Hilton Head historical documents. The postcards in the book are from their private collection of the modern era of the island.

Before the post–World War II construction boom, Bedford, Massachusetts, was considered little more than a sleepy farming community, yet it was host to a series of remarkable institutions. In the late 1800s, the Bedford Springs resort on Fawn Lake was a summertime haven for wealthy Bostonians. From 1902 to 1918, large crowds traveled by streetcar to Lexington Park in Bedford to enjoy its zoo, restaurant, and rustic outdoor theater. In 1900, Bedford's reputation as a rural temperance town attracted a hospital for the treatment of alcoholism. Ten years later, the Willard Hospital was succeeded by Llewsac Lodge, a rest home and country retreat for women from the city. Proximity to Boston and the needs of both military and civil aviation led to the construction of the Laurence G. Hanscom Airport in 1941. Today, Bedford is an integral part of the Boston area's high-technology industry while still retaining a small-town character that its residents cherish.

Walworth County is unique in South Dakota. There are few places in the United States that can boast of the heritage of the land and people like this county. As early as 1823, hunters, trappers, and later Gen. William Ashley came up the Missouri River with the intent to establish a post. By 1869, some of the Sioux tribes signed a treaty with the US government, giving up a defined land district that included what became Walworth County.

As early as 1829, Antoine Dutot saw potential for a profitable resort industry at the Delaware Water Gap and began construction of the first Kittatinny House overlooking the Delaware River. After the arrival of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad in 1856, other hostelries of various sizes and appointments followed and were soon filled each summer with happy vacationers from New York City and Philadelphia. Residents of surrounding villages on both sides of the Delaware River also shared the seasonal wealth of this natural playground, yet they still managed to make a living during the rest of the year. River Towns of the Delaware Water Gap salutes the grand hotels, their diminutive "little sisters," and the people who ran them or lived in the gap and its neighboring river towns.

Amityville, a small, close-knit community located on the south shore of Long Island, was originally referred to as Huntington West Neck South. A more proper name was adopted in 1846 when, after a particularly unruly village meeting, the wife of a prominent local businessman cried, What this meeting needs is a little amity. Amityville depicts the history of the friendly bay village, from its early days of salt hay that once grew abundantly along the shoreline, through the nearly forgotten era of its grand Victorian-style seaside hotels, to the present-day role it plays as a suburban oasis of metropolitan New York. Selected from the archives of the Amityville Historical Society and several private individuals, the postcards in Amityville reveal wide tree-lined boulevards, waterfront vistas, and gracious century-old homes, while depicting the daily comings and goings of early residents and famed visitors alike.

The 1920s was a time of unprecedented growth in the nation's oldest city.
Fueled by a land boom that began in South Florida, St. Augustine was inundated with land speculators and new subdivisions, many only supported by a wing and a prayer. The city floated a million-dollar bond issue to construct the Bridge of Lions, and D.P. Davis filled in an entire marshland to build his magnificent subdivision of Davis Shores. When a new coastal highway linked the town with beached to the north and south and opened up St. Augustine’s beautiful shoreline for development, tourists began flocking to the city in droves. All of this activity halted, however, when the land boom collapsed in the late 1920s, along with rest of the U.S. economy at that time.St. Augustine in the Roaring Twentiesdetails the roller-coaster events of the city in this exciting decade.

Situated among the rolling hills of north central Pennsylvania, Jefferson County was formed in 1804. Brookville became the county seat in 1830 by virtue of its location at the confluence of the North Fork Creek and Sandy Lick Creek, forming Redbank Creek, and its centrality in the more than 1,000 square miles that comprised the original county. Settlers timbered, farmed, and rafted products to market when water was high. With the completion of the Allegheny Valley low-grade railroad in 1874 and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Railroad in 1882, mining dominated the area. Rail transportation made possible the development of glass, iron, silk, sheet metal, clothing, and furniture factories. During World War II, several companies manufactured materials in support of the Allies. Today, timbering flourishes, as do the powdered metal and glass container industries. The Allegheny National and Cook forests to the north and historic Brookville, Punxsutawney Phil, and the nationally renowned Coolspring Power Museum all attract many tourists.
