Covington was a natural place for people to settle. Located on the banks of the Ohio and Licking Rivers, it developed quickly as the urban core of northern Kentucky. Sitting just opposite of Cincinnati, Ohio, it was a great location for travel by both animals and people. Originally owned by Thomas Kennedy, the land was ultimately purchased by Thomas Carneal and John and Richard Gano, and thus the city of Covington was founded in 1815. Not long after its establishment, railroads made Covington their home and many other businesses followed. By 1850, it was the second-largest city in Kentucky. The Latonia Racetrack, opened in 1883, was one of the country's finest. Its presence spurred development, and the resulting town eventually took its name from the famous track. At the midpoint of the 19th century, people and goods moved by river or muddy roads, which made traveling difficult; a stagecoach trip from Louisville to Nashville took 36 hours. Railroads were coming into prominence at the time, and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was chartered in 1850. The name Fort Wright was derived from the town's strategic location during the Civil War. Just south of Cincinnati, Fort Wright was one of the highest points in Northern Kentucky in 1862. As the Confederate Army marched to attack Cincinnati, Gen. Horatio Wright, the city's namesake, commanded region-wide volunteers who built fortified positions that repulsed the attack. In the 1900s, development on the Lexington Turnpike (today's Dixie Highway) brought gambling, Frank Sinatra, and even Pres. Richard Nixon to Fort Wright. Nestled among the rolling hills of southern Boone County, Walton and Verona have existed side by side since the early 19th century. Walton's first post office, known as Gaines Crossroads, was established in 1815 and named after the Abner Gaines family that owned most of the land. Van Lear was a sparsely populated farm community at the dawn of the 20th century. Known originally as Miller's Creek, its pastoral nature was soon lost as it transformed into a thriving municipality. John C. C. Mayo, a young schoolmaster, was the force behind this development.
