Originally named Pleasant View, Misquamicut is a lovely stretch of beach located in southern Rhode Island. Court Bliven and his wife named the area for its remarkable views. They built the first cottage, called the Pioneer, in 1894 and the Wigwam Hotel in 1905. The trolley came to the area in 1908, and by 1911, there were three major hotels, a casino, a village square, and 150 cottages. Its Victorian charm attracted visitors from all parts of the country, but the Hurricane of 1938 devastated Misquamicut and destroyed many of its photographs. Misquamicut brings together more than 200 vintage postcards, many very rare, in chronological order dating from 1894 to today.

Imagine a landscape alternating between groves of majestic hardwood and vast prairies. Moses Cleaveland's surveyors began dividing Connecticut's Western Reserve into townships and tracts for sale to settlers in 1796. The southern portion of Euclid Township included a wooded plateau that could be harvested and cleared for farming and orchards. Small factories made wooden baskets for carrying produce to the markets in the growing city of Cleveland to the west. Streambeds deeply eroded the edge of the plateau, exposing a rich layer of dense sandstone, and as a result quarries developed along Euclid Creek where this valuable stone was most accessible. A small, separate community called Bluestone grew to support the industry but was absorbed when the quarries became uneconomical. In 1877, a plank toll road named Mayfield was built eastward from Cleveland through the area that became South Euclid. In the early 1900s, the planks were replaced by paved road and an interurban rail line carrying both passenger and freight cars. The road eased transportation for farmers and became the heart of today's business district.

In April 1782, Gen. George Washington rode into Newburgh and found a sprawling town. At the end of what is now Liberty Street was the fieldstone house of the late Col. Jonathan Hasbrouck. In 1820, Ezekial Zeke Smith built a gristmill on the bank of Roan Creek, forming the community known as Smith Hill. Following the Civil War, it was renamed Butler in honor of Col. Roderick Random Butler. Much of the city's early development can be attributed to the establishment of the Aenon Seminary in 1871 and the advent of the Virginia and South Western Railroad, which provided transportation for residents and the developing logging industry. In 1933, the scenic landscape of the Watauga Valley was altered forever when the Tennessee Valley Authority was created by Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal legislation. TVA provided electric power for the state and controlled the flooding of the rivers in the region. In December 1948, the gates of the Watauga Dam were closed and water began to fill the Watauga Reservoir until Butler, Tennessee, was laid to rest at the bottom of Watauga Lake. The residents of Butler and the surrounding communities were forced to relinquish, demolish, or relocate more than 125 homes and 50 businesses.
