Charleston was founded in 1670 by people recruited in the coffeehouses and pubs of London. They were a diverse and interesting group that created a vibrant, sophisticated city in the wilderness. This book tells the stories of people in each era of the city's history. There is a second-grade class photograph that contains a mayor, an admiral, and the grandfather of a senator; Christopher Gadsden, who is buried in an unmarked grave because he feared his enemies would defile his body; and Isaac Hayne, who was hanged by the British for being a traitor. There is Mary Moultrie, who led the strike of hospital employees that earned equal pay and fair treatment for nurses. Today, Shepard Fairey, Stephen Colbert, and Tim Scott keep Charleston's reputation for rebelliousness alive.

Local legend says that Marquis Charles Cornwallis, Revolutionary War hero, rode into this area and declared, How fair are these hills and thus, Fairfield County was born.

Fairfield County is a unique blend of tradition, culture, and history. Freedom-seekers, farmers, and religious folks came from the northern trails, while many aristocrats and plantation owners traveled from the coast. These citizens bred a unique and proud folk ranging from sturdy military men who protected their land during the American Revolution and the Civil War to educators who started well-known educational institutions and produced prominent military men and politicians who forever changed the world. Fairfield County is also known for its culture and music. Many recognized beauty queens, artists, musicians, and sports figures hail from this midland region of South Carolina.

Before the Europeans came, Amerindians celebrated on Hilton Head Island with seasonal oyster feasts. Later, planters made fortunes here with Sea Island cotton. But the island came alive to the guns of the Union in 1861 and, for seven years, was host to the troops who helped former slaves even before the Emancipation Proclamation made freedom official. The forces left, and the island slept. In the pages of this book are some of the people who kept the Gullah sea island culture alive, a self-sustaining culture of mutual help and integrity, living off the sea and the land. This volume also includes some of the people who set a standard for development and made the island what it is today, unique visionaries who had a fierce devotion to preservation of the island's natural beauty, its flora, and its fauna.

Greer, an 1876 railroad town, was founded by people who moved from farms,  the mountain region of the Dark Corner, and other small communities  to the area around Greer's Depot with high expectations of prosperity  promised by railroad commerce and, later, the cotton mills. Like a colorful  quilt with its individual patches, the early population of Greer included  farmers, store keepers, laborers skilled and unskilled, and their wives and  families. As the town grew, investors funded three local cotton mills; mill  hands and supervisors arrived to operate them. The bankers, attorneys,  physicians, teachers, and ministers followed. Eager to succeed, they all  labored long and hard, some heroically like Officer William Foster and  volunteer fireman Carl Miller, who died in the line of duty. Greer folk  reared families, provided education, and imbued their children with strong  moral and religious values. Their descendents continue to populate the city  today with a strong sense of community pride.

As the most significant eighteenth-century estate assembled in the British American colonies still in existence, Drayton Hall is an icon of American history, design and preservation.

Its story is told through archaeological artifacts, architectural research and documentary investigations, with a focus on the inhabitants and their connections to the wider Atlantic world. A multitude of scholars contributed to our understanding of Drayton Hall as the first complete example of Palladian architecture in North America, its placement at the intersection of the European Enlightenment and America's slave society and as a family home where extraordinary events became landmark historic moments. Today, Drayton Hall is valued as the most authentic pre-Revolutionary southern plantation that helps examine the creation of American identity.

Standing on the banks of the Black River, Mansfield Plantation is a living testament to antebellum rice plantations. In 1718, it started as a five-hundred-acre land grant near the upstart village of Georgetown. The main house was built around 1800, and the plantation soon grew to nearly one thousand acres. John and Sallie Middleton Parker returned the property to the Man-Taylor-Lance-Parker family, a line of ownership dating back 150 years. Ongoing preservation projects ensure that future generations can explore and appreciate one of the most well-preserved rice plantations in America. Plantation historian Christopher C. Boyle captures the spirit of Mansfield Plantation and unravels the many mysteries of its past.
