The Lake Shore Electric Railway commenced operation in 1893 on the north coast of Ohio, providing transportation to Cleveland, Lorain, Sandusky, Toledo, and on to Detroit, Michigan. On New Year's Day, they went on strike. The bitter stalemate broke only when operators sidestepped local labor by employing African Americans from Virginia and Italian immigrants crowding the Eastern Seaboard. Violence followed. Price Hill

Early settlers first called this area Boldface Hill, for a Native American chieftain, but the name was soon changed to Price's Hill, named after Rees Price and his family, who were among the first city dwellers to see the residential potential of the area. Rees's father, Evan Price, speculated in land west of the city, and his son opened a brickyard and sawmill to serve the building boom. In 1874, Rees's sons John and William built an inclined plane to make the commute up the hill easier. With improved transportation, the community's population soared, mostly because the air was cleaner up on the hill than it was downtown. Railroad Depots of Northeast Ohio

Early postcards and photographs reveal the begininngs of rail travel in Ohio, and the rail depots and buildings that served the passengers and their goods.

The first rail lines in northeast Ohio opened for business in July 1850, and by the 1890s, northeast Ohio was laced with railroad tracks. Williams County

Beginning on Easter Sunday, March 23, 1913, torrential rains across the Midwest dropped a record three months of rainfall in four days.

Colerain Township

Colerain Township, the largest township in the state of Ohio, was founded in 1794. Cleveland's Slovaks can best be characterized as survivors. Many survived ethnic persecution and poverty so they could have a chance at something better. Beginning with a small core of immigrants seeking work above ground rather than in the coal mines of neighboring states, Cleveland's Slovak community grew through a giant chain migration. Their neighborhoods flourished close to their jobs and their churches. Many of the ancestors of today's Slovaks came to the United States classified as Hungarians. Cortland and Bazetta Township

In the winter of 1804-1805, Edward Scofield and a small group entered the township in search of a creek suitable for a mill and good land for settlement. Within a few years, Walnut Run, a tributary of Mosquito Creek, was providing waterpower to a gristmill and a sawmill, and other settlers began to arrive. The area around the mill was called by various names: first, Leroy, as named by Scofield, or East Bazetta, referring to its location east of Mosquito Creek that divided the township nearly in half; then Baconsburgh because of the many settlers from the Bacon family; and finally Cortland following incorporation. Over the years, the area around Walnut Run flourished, churches were built, businesses and industries were established, and a lake was built during World War II. Then, as now, people worked very hard to make Bazetta Township and its only city a great place in which to live.

Nathaniel Sackett Sr. was head of the secret service at Fishkill, New York, during the Revolutionary War. Monroe was platted by his son Nathaniel Sackett and John Piatt in 1817.
