In 1946, the US Forest Service and Simpson Logging Company agreed to a sustained yield unit, cooperatively managing lands for 100 years for "community stability." Championed by USFS chief William Greeley and dubbed the "Sustained Steal" by detractors, the Shelton Cooperative Sustained Yield Unit nonetheless provided jobs for returning World War II veterans. Simpson Logging built the largest logging camp in the continental United States, Camp Grisdale, which had a two-room school and a two-lane bowling alley. Shelton and McCleary were saved from becoming ghosts towns, and downtown Shelton was modernized with a shopping center, parks, and schools. Mason County's Forest Festival was a weekend celebration for 30,000 visitors that included a parade and logging shows. As the only cooperative unit established in the United States, it attracted national attention, including TV personality Arthur Godfrey. In 1961, the movie Ring of Fire was filmed above Camp Grisdale. As World War II memories faded, logging practices were challenged by notions of wilderness and recreation. Improved equipment reduced the jobs, and when Simpson withdrew from the sustained yield agreement, employees were disenfranchised.

Fort Lawton was established to provide protection for the navy yard built at Bremerton in 1891 as well the cities along Puget Sound and the commerce generated by them. The development of Fort Lawton was encouraged by civic leaders in Seattle for economic reasons and to curb lawlessness. Although intended primarily as an infantry post, the first soldiers to arrive on July 26, 1901, were artillerymen. For centuries, Native American tribes lived peacefully along the trout-filled stream in a ravine that would later become part of northeastern Seattle. In 1887, the Reverend Beck disembarked from the Seattle Lake Shore & Eastern Railroad and, in this same area, bought 300 lushly forested acres that he turned into a township and park, both called Ravenna. The town was only three and a half miles from the city center and soon boasted a flour mill and a finishing school. Listed on the local Tacoma Register, the Washington Heritage Register, and the National Register of Historic Places, the North Slope is the largest residential historic district in Washington. Vashon-Maury Island lies between Seattle and Tacoma and is connected to the mainland by the Washington State Ferries. The bridge proposed in the 1950s and 1960s did not materialize, which helped retain the island's isolation and rural lifestyle. Issaquah, Washington

Incorporated as Gilman in 1892, Issaquah was among the earliest communities settled on the east side of Lake Washington. By 1900, immigrants and newcomers were flooding into the town now known as Issaquah to work the mines, mill lumber, and establish farms and businesses. Though the town's growth dwindled with the coal market in the 1920s, families first attracted by the area's business opportunities stayed because they loved the close-knit community. Sa'quad, meaning spear it, is one of the names used by the Suquamish tribe to refer to the Clear Creek camping ground, the estuary, and all of Dyes Inlet. In the 1850s, William Littlewood was the first settler in the Clear Creek area. The town site was platted in 1889, adopting the name Silverdale a year later. The principal industry was logging, which evolved into chicken ranching and farming, aided by the first in a series of cooperative stores.
