Three Mile Bay, located just below the Canadian border in the town of Lyme, was settled between 1810 and 1820. Early immigrants from Canada and Europe were drawn by the abundance of water-powered mills and factories along the area's waterways. At the mouth of Three Mile Creek stood the sawmill of Peter and Richard Estes, built in 1820; from 1860 to the 1900s, limestone quarried in the Three Mile Bay area was known for its superior quality. Resident Asa Wilcox built 48 brigs, propellers, schooners, and other seafaring vessels from 1835 to 1853, some ultimately joining the approximately 500 shipwrecked vessels now resting at the bottom of Lake Ontario. Fishing and selling potash were often carried on by farmers as side ventures. When loads of potash, and occasionally wheat, were hauled to Albany, on the return trip merchandise was brought back to be sold in local stores. For generations, families developed their trades and helped to sustain the hard-working people of the hamlet of Three Mile Bay.

Originally named Pleasant View, Misquamicut is a lovely stretch of beach located in southern Rhode Island. Court Bliven and his wife named the area for its remarkable views. They built the first cottage, called the Pioneer, in 1894 and the Wigwam Hotel in 1905. The village of Yellow Springs has perhaps the most intriguing and varied history of any site in Chester County. Archaeological evidence suggests that Lenape Indians used the site's iron-rich springwater, as did Colonial settlers as early as 1722. George Washington stayed at the site following the Battle of the Brandywine and commissioned the first permanent military hospital in North America to be built here during the Valley Forge encampment. Following the war, Yellow Springs flourished as a spa resort with the addition of new hotels, visitor amenities, and springhouses. In 1868, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased the village to create the Chester Springs Soldiers' Orphan School, a boarding school for orphans of Civil War soldiers. Sapulpa is named after a young Creek Indian who came to the area around 1840 and opened a trading post near Pole Cat Creek. The area that would become the Creek Nation is a small part of the land acquired by the United States after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Imagine a landscape alternating between groves of majestic hardwood and vast prairies. Moses Cleaveland's surveyors began dividing Connecticut's Western Reserve into townships and tracts for sale to settlers in 1796. The southern portion of Euclid Township included a wooded plateau that could be harvested and cleared for farming and orchards. Small factories made wooden baskets for carrying produce to the markets in the growing city of Cleveland to the west. Streambeds deeply eroded the edge of the plateau, exposing a rich layer of dense sandstone, and as a result quarries developed along Euclid Creek where this valuable stone was most accessible. A small, separate community called Bluestone grew to support the industry but was absorbed when the quarries became uneconomical. In 1877, a plank toll road named Mayfield was built eastward from Cleveland through the area that became South Euclid. In the early 1900s, the planks were replaced by paved road and an interurban rail line carrying both passenger and freight cars. The road eased transportation for farmers and became the heart of today's business district.

Originally known as Farnsworth's Landing, Bordentown was settled in 1682 by Quaker Thomas Farnsworth. Created from part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Indian reservation, 1,008 square miles of rich agricultural land became home to over 5,000 homesteaders with a run at high noon on April 19, 1892. The county has a rich heritage as about 55 communities and over 100 school districts were established during the first 10 years. As Oklahoma was a territory at the time, only Congress could establish a county seat, and it named Cloud Chief, with a population of about 20 or 30, as the county seat. According to history, Cloud Chief, located in the southeast corner of the county, had several businesses established by midafternoon and a population of over 3,000 that first night. In 1900, the people of Washita County, by a vote of 1,349 in favor to 282 in opposition, illegally moved the courthouse under gunfire to Cordell, which was located in the exact center of the county. Today Washita County has 44 ghost towns, which had a post office or a community store that no
longer exist.

In 1740, a group of Hispanic families, seeking new cultivatable land, received a grant of more than 200,000 acres from the governor of Spanish New Mexico. In 1793, a church was built in the Belen Old Town Plaza under the direction of Franciscan priests. An agricultural community was formed around several plazas, and residents prospered through barter and subsistence farming. In the 1850s and 1860s, German immigrants joined Hispanic merchants to form a vibrant business community. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad arrived in Belen in the 1880s, and the nearby Belen Cutoff in 1908 linked both north-south and east-west rail lines to give Belen the nickname of the Hub City. Cincinnati's General Protestant Orphan Home

In 1849, a cholera epidemic devastated Cincinnati, taking the lives of 4,114 residents. The First German Protestant Aid Association proposed creating a home for the orphaned children and established the German General Protestant Orphan Asylum in Mount Auburn. The annual Orphan Feast and parade began in 1851 and was one of the largest one-day festivals in Cincinnati for 137 years. In 1949, the orphanage moved to 62 acres straddling Mount Washington and Anderson Township. The orphanage's name changed to Beech Acres, after the beech trees lining the property. In the 1980s, the orphanage closed and the focus shifted from restorative to preventive social services for children and families. The increased focus on strengthening the relationship between parents and their children resulted in a change to the current name, Beech Acres Parenting Center.
