Discover the stories, history and meaning of Cherokee pottery and artists.

The intricate designs and complex patterns of Cherokee pottery have been developed over centuries. Both timeless and time-honored, these singular works of pottery are still crafted by the proud hands of Cherokee women in Western North Carolina. Cherokee Pottery recounts the history of a tradition passed from elder to child through countless generations. Anna Fariello, associate professor at Western Carolina University, explores the method and meaning molded into each piece, along with the stories of the potters themselves.

Florida’s amazing landscapes and fascinating wildlife were sources of inspiration for early naturalists seeking new horizons. Among them was John James Audubon. Elegant herons, acrobatic terns, endearing pelicans and colorful roseate spoonbills all feature among his beloved artwork. But Audubon was not the first nature artist inspired by Florida. Mark Catesby, an English country squire turned adventurer, helped introduce the wonders of Florida to a European audience in the 1700s. And William Bartram, a Pennsylvania Quaker, traveled south to explore the Florida wilderness, where he canoed across a lake full of alligators and lived to sketch the creatures. Author Chris Fasolino shares the stories of these artistic expeditions in a collection replete with gorgeous artwork that includes high-definition images of Audubon’s rarely seen original paintings.

The grit and grandeur of New Orleans helped give rise to an icon of French Impressionism. Edgar Degas's mother was from New Orleans and from the time he buried her, he pined for Louisiana. In 1872, when he arrived, he found New Orleans wracked with devastation. He struggled with the conflict of helping his family' bankrupt cotton business, while pursuing his passion to paint. Amidst this turmoil, blossomed a tragic friendship with his blind sister-in-law, his beautiful muse. Edgar nearly went mad when he discovered his brother had gone through all the family money, and was having an affair with his wife's best friend. This book rips open the divide between Edgar and his brother that kept them from speaking for ten years, and led Edgar to start a new direction in his work: Impressionism.

Since 1925, the John C. Campbell Folk School has invited people to explore their creative potential in the serene setting of Brasstown, North Carolina. Those pursuits began with education, agriculture, and traditional Appalachian crafts, including wood carving and blacksmithing. One hundred years later, the school expanded into more than 50 subject areas, from cooking and clay to shoemaking and stained glass. Friends and cofounders Olive Dame Campbell and Marguerite Butler were influenced by the Danish folkehøjskole, or “folk high school,” and set out to create a similar opportunity in Appalachia where learning would be noncompetitive and meals would be communal. The folk school has provided the foundation for the internationally recognized Brasstown Carvers, created a music and dance program with regular offerings for concerts and contras, and now welcomes thousands of students while holding over 800 weeklong and weekend classes per year. 

It continues to be, as Olive once described, “an experiment in adult education” that seeks to enliven and enlighten the world.

Many Alabamians may not realize how many of their fond memories involve advertising signs.

Although these neon spectaculars, billboards and even signs painted directly onto brick walls were created expressly to persuade customers or tourists to patronize businesses, many such signs remained in place for so long that they became landmarks in their own right. From the California-inspired sign for Art’s Char House and the ubiquitous signage of Bargain Town USA to Tuscaloosa’s famed Moon Winx Motel neon masterpiece, author Tim Hollis guides readers on a hunt for signs that wormed their way into the collective Alabama memory.

Railroad and shipyard heir Archer Milton Huntington and his sculptor wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington, bought four former rice plantations on the northeastern coast of South Carolina in 1930 to create a winter home. The special nature of the 9,000-acre property, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Waccamaw River, prompted the couple to establish Brookgreen Gardens, the first public sculpture garden in America and a sanctuary for southeastern plants and animals. Archer Huntington's passion for the history and culture of Spain was shown in the home he designed. Inspired by the Moorish architecture of Spain and northern Africa, Atalaya was not the usual millionaire's beach resort, although it provided an economic boon to the area. The home was a retreat while Anna recuperated from tuberculosis and Archer continued his business and philanthropic interests. Today, Atalaya is part of Huntington Beach State Park where visitors tour the home with a docent or an audio tour and are intrigued by its design and the legacy of the Huntingtons.

Authors Deb Schillo and Barbara Miller take the reader through the fascinating history of the Southern Highland Craft Guild through a series of charming images and narratives of the craftspeople and artists throughout the 20th and into the 21st century that have made the Guild the world-renown cultural staple that it is today.

The Southern Highland Craft Guild is the oldest craft guild in the United States and the only guild to be defined by a geographical area. First conceived by Olive Dame Campbell in the 1920s, the craft guild was launched in 1930 with an exhibition of regional arts. Frances Louisa Goodrich contributed her Allanstand Shop so that families living in an already depressed region would have a sales venue for their work throughout the Great Depression and the years of World War II. From that early start, the Southern Highland Craft Guild has grown to nearly a thousand members and has established a worldwide reputation for fine workmanship. The guild is governed by the artist membership, which is made up of a wide range of craftspeople from institute-trained artists to local makers trained by parents and friends. Deb Schillo served as the guild's librarian and archivist for 20 years. Barbara Miller juried into the guild in 1965 and is still an active member, having served on the board and numerous committees. The authors have selected a sampling of the thousands of photographs and materials from the archives of the Southern Highland Craft Guild to provide a glimpse at some of the people and places that contributed to where the guild is today.
